Attendance was about 15 on this hot afternoon with a nice wind cooling things down when the game started. Oh oh, overcast too, I should have known....quite a rain storm came across and lightning got closer and closer. Referee Kim Lee called a break freezing the scoreboard at 24:40. Good call as the stands are made of aluminum. I had set off from my seat a few minutes earlier when the rain started and walked around the boundary fence still able to stand on my toes to look over the screening to see a few shots as I made my way to the 'treehouse' shelter of the match officials. I could have been there at the start of the game but I'd be taking photos into the sun. The wooden treehouse takes in a lot of rain anyway falling between the slats of the roof. I was protecting my notebook (that's pen and paper, kids!) so posed like I was playing Twister go keep dry until the game was officially delayed then took shelter in the indoor facility nearby. The game was stopped at 3:24pm and the rain stopped and the sun came out at 3:45pm. The game was restarted at 3:59pm and it started to rain about a minute later. This scenario played out in the 'big leagues' as the MLS game between Montreal and Toronto FC had some of the same incidents although at this game the second rain never got anywhere near as hard. The fans although the smallest I've seen at any game this year stayed loyal (sheltering in their cars until the restart) as they'd come a long way to see their sons. This game was held in the Greater Toronto area because it is a four hour drive from Windsor (players came in a fleet of SUVs) and a five hour drive (I confirmed with their bus driver) from Ottawa so this was a compromise the league's done before. Think of doubling that time to get back home the same day and it's a good choice. I was here, same location two years ago, but last year this game kept being postponed and finally put off until the season's last weekend and turned into a 3-0 forfeit when Windsor informed the league (on a few days notice) they would not be fielding a team. I was glad I was here because I saw what deserves to be the 'Goal of the Year'. Tyrone Mulder scored on a bicycle kick which is frozen in my mind on slow motion replay. Even the OSUF parents a few rows in front of my were cheering about this effort. It 'deserves' to win but it won't because the game was not filmed. I asked an L1O official about that and they say videoing the games is up to the home team to make arrangements. OSUF has their favourite in Ottawa but this game was quite a distance away. These games aren't OneSoccer quality but just camcorder on a pole but should have been recorded just in case something like this goal happened! I think of numerous operators looking for work who record the men's and women's games who would have been available on a few day's notice. There was a photographer who took pictures of the play and the WTFC players crowded around after the game to look with shouts of “Send me that one!” (Sorry I saw his tweet of the picture but can't find it now and have lost his name). So only me and the 15 fans and players and officials there will have seen it. ***EDIT Late news. It was Kevin Raposo on Twitter as @kevinraposo who made the tweet. Thank you to Windsor TFC account @WinTFC for linking to his site. After the game Mulder answered me that he wasn't in the GTA last Saturday when WTFC played Aurora FC because he was injured. Kaneen Fells (starter) and Brogan Engbers each worked a half in goal and shared the shutout for WTFC. A tweet from the league revealed that OSUF didn't have a shot on net today. Well it's a resume builder! Referee Kim Lee gave out only one Yellow card and waited until 90 minutes to call a slide tackle from behind against OSUF Hansley Malonga. The game was pretty tame as I saw it. OSUF Chris Yoo was down at 79 minutes and it was WTFC Ard Dieker twisting his leg back into position to work out the cramp. Best non-scoring moments were at 14 minutes when WTFC Tyrone Mulder rescued a ball on the right end line and sent a low cross to WTFC Leonardo Fereirra DaSilva who eluded a defender and took an 8 yard shot wide left. 24 minutes (right after the restart) a WTFC cornerkick had WTFC Brendan Woodfull head a 7 yarder on the left that the goalie caught. Injury time had OSUF Aidan Tuck take a cornerkick from the right had OSUF Pavle Vujicic leap and head the ball down at 10 yards on the left and the goalie caught it on the bounce. 74 minutes had Fereirra DaSilva take a 25 yard freekick from the left that bent into the outside webbing of the net. 81 minutes and Fereirra DaSilva's cornerkick from the left had the goalie punch away on the right post for a cornerkick. Then Andrew Ribeiro took a cornerkick from the other side which the goalie also punched away in a crowd of players. Injury time had OSUF Hansley Malonga take a 25 yard freekick from the top left of the box that OSUF Zachary Toupin at 8 yards pop a header high and wide right. OSUF extends their dubious record of not scoring since their one goal in the season opener. They've played ten games since. Windsor improve their record to 2 wins (one better than all of last year!), 7 losses, 1 tie for 7 points and climb into a fourteenth place tie with Toronto Skillz who have an identical record today. Skillz will play Sunday (WTFC had a game postponed earlier this season). OSUF record falls to 0 wins, 10 losses, and 1 tie for 1 point and sixteenth. Their only positive result was last weekend when they held the visiting first place team Vaughan Azzurri to a scoreless draw. Goalie of that game (whose come to the GTA before) Horace Patient Sobze Zemo did not make the trip today and both teams had short benches. One official who did come to town for OSUF was Samir Karaga. I had to be reminded of his name when I heard him start talking about Ottawa Wizards that he was a forward for them in their CPSL days of 2001 to 2003. Now that was a time when an Ottawa area team dominated the GTA teams! Even with the rain delay it still left me plenty of time to drive crosstown to see Masters FA hosting Alliance United who are both at the opposite end of the L1O table.
