Final Score:...Vaughan Azzurri.......5........Windsor TFC........0.......
Attendance was about 50 on this hot and sunny day. I thought this game would have a lot of goals and Vaughan would be scoring them. Windsor has only scored five this season. I've been attending CPL York 9 FC games and goals have been in short supply. Actually yesterday afternoon I saw four of last year's Vaughan L1O league and cup champions playing for York 9 and two playing for HFX Wanderers. Vaughan's head coach last year is an assistant coach on York 9 now. Windsor brought a short bench (only making two subs) and I thought that would effect them late in the game but Vaughan put it away in the first half. Matt George earned the shutout for Vaughan without having much to do as Windsor players had few shots and most were off target. One incident at 56 minute started a dust-up when George had to turn back towards goal to grab a bouncer and W Xhoejian Cekaj put his foot up to chest high to jab at the ball. That got the two of them going at it and the referee had to break that up and deal with the enraged Windsor head coach Ryan Mendonca and ignore the comments from the angry father in the stands. 62 minutes had a collision that injured Windsor goalie Kaneen Fells and Vaughan forward Maksym Kowal at the 12 yard line when a high cross was sent into the box. The game wasn't too rough except that a player on each team had to be replaced in first half injury time because of injuries in separate incidents. The first one allowed the referee to call a water break while the trainer worked on W Nameer Sto. The incidents dragged the first half to 54 minutes from the '2 minutes added' that was originally scheduled. Referee Hassane Rifai gave out two Yellow cards and they were within seconds to two Vaughan players for complaining far away from where a whistle was blown to award Windsor a freekick at 76 minutes. The win moves Vaughan into a tie for first place with Oakville Blue Devils with identical 7 win, 1 loss, 0 ties for 21 points. Vaughan is actually listed first as they have a +22 in goals for/against whereas OBD is +12. Vaughan is the hottest team in the league after losing their opening game of the year against Sigma FC they've won every one since including a 4-1 win at the beginning of the month against OBD in Oakville. Windsor's record falls to 1 win, 6 losses, 0 ties for 3 points. They are currently fifteenth. I never thought Windsor nor FC London were particularly close to the MLS Toronto FC team (that's at the League 1 Ontario level) when they signed their sponsorship deals. It was the 14 year old and under kids I expected TFC would be more interested in for coaching and their academy programs. Today I thought I recognized the Windsor back up goalie. Yes once I had the game sheets I did realize it was Brogan Engbers. He played for Toronto FC III (who were in this league since the beginning but at the end of last season joined the USSDA system). I asked him after the game because the next progression would be the USL Toronto FC II team. He said he can't play for them as changes to the Academy system and TFC II mean he'd be on the same team as professional contracted players and would lose his eligibility to play for his university team. (I looked it up later to remind me it was Liberty University in Lynchburg Virginia co-founded by evangelist Jerry Falwell). He could join amateur Windsor TFC though so to keep in game shape he has been offered to play games--but road games. Windsor is quite a distance but the team is usually in the GTA every second week as most of the teams are here. We've now reached the halfway point of the season with all teams playing seven or eight games of their fifteen game schedules. Top eight teams in the sixteen team league make the playoffs which will be knock out rounds this year. This is finally the last game scheduled at McNaughton Turf Field after more than a month's delay the club's new facilities will finally be opened at North Maple Regional Park which is just a little farther north on Keele Street than this facility. (Next home game on their schedule is on Sunday July 14). The club will be able to consolidate their youth teams to one central location instead of renting facilities all over the city. This season they've given up on getting the scoreboard to run in the south end and instead use a table-top scoreboard near the PA announcer's canopy which is on the same side of the field as the spectators and can't be seen by them. Rumours last year were that the York 9 FC new facility would be on a packet of land almost beside this property near Kirby but the CPL team's plan now appears to a choice between three possible sites.
