Dos Santos brace extends Ottawa’s undefeated run

OTTAWA — Ottawa Fury FC continued its impressive run, extending both its unbeaten streak and shutout streak
to six matches following a 3-0 win against Toronto FC II at TD Place on Wednesday night. There was an
unfortunate start to the match as Toronto FC II goalkeeper Drew Shepherd and Ottawa Fury FC midfielder
Kevin Olivera injured each other in a head clash, forcing Shepherd to leave the match, but Ottawa was
awarded a penalty kick for the challenge that Steevan Dos Santos buried from the spot, sending new
goalkeeper Gianluca Catalano the wrong way. Despite having such a hefty share of possession, at one point
sitting over 70 percent, TFC II couldn’t convert it into chances, being held shotless through
the first 45 minutes. Ottawa started the second half well and three minutes in a corner saw the lead doubled
as Nana Attakora leaped highest to get on the end of Carl Haworth’s delivery to head it down and out of the
reach of Catalano for his first goal since 2016, and first in the USL. Despite coming on early in the match
Catalano was not daunted by his surprise entry, making some stunning saves to keep his side in the match,
including back-to-back saves on Gabriel Wiethaeuper-Balbinotti in the 58th minute. A perfectly placed
through-ball for Toronto's Shaan Hundal nearly pulled the visitors back into the match as he looked to round
Ottawa goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau, but the Canadian U20 international couldn’t keep control of the ball with
Crepeau putting him off just enough to force a goal kick. The match was wrapped up when Dos Santos used his
strength to hold off his defender and send a shot powerfully across the face of goal just out of Catalano’s
reach and into the back of the net with 11 minutes to go, from where the hosts saw out another solid victory.

#OTTvTOR: Highlights and Opta Box Score

Three Things That Matter:

1. Ottawa Fury FC has really stepped up its defense in recent matches, a big part of what has helped the team
to its successful run. Fury FC has not conceded since its clash with FC Cincinnati on April 28, and its
six-game shutout streak has now stretched to 553 minutes. With the in-form Charlotte Independence coming
to TD Place on Saturday that back line will surely be tested.

2. Conversely, Toronto FC II is still winless on the season so far, the last of the teams in the USL Eastern
Conference looking for its first win. TFC II has not kept a clean sheet in its past seven matches and has
now lost six matches in a row.

3. For just the second time this season Toronto FC II won the possession battle, holding 70.2 percent of the
possession at full time. But, as has been the case all season, the visitors failed to do anything with the ball,
finishing with just one shot on target as Fury FC were scarcely troubled.
