June 28, 2018 League 1 Ontario--Sigma FC vs North Mississauga game review (from League 1 Ontario website)
Sigma's Smith Goal Separates Sigma From North Miss In Local Derby 06/28/2018, 5:00pm EDT By Kacian Whyte Sigma FC earned a hard fought three points after defeating North Mississauga Panthers 1-0 during the Mississauga derby. Both sides kicked off the match in attack mode. The "Boys in Blue" mounted the first attack down the wing but it was quickly neutralized by the Panthers. The first on-target attempt for Sigma did not come until the 11th minute when Simon Triantafillou converted a wild ball into a shot on target but was not able to score. North Mississauga earned a chance to counter in the 14th minute when Marko Bedenikovic took a free-kick put placed wide. The Panthers struggled to get a shot on target during the first half as the back-line let by captain Giuliano Frano managed to reverse the play to give Sigma the advantage. Despite the four shots on target from Sigma and the two from North Mississauga, the half ended scoreless. The action in the second half started with Kadell Thomas being brought down just outside the 18-yard box, earning his side a free-kick, taken by Justin Stoddart, who placed it high, over the wall and over the net. Thomas was brought down again in the 64th minute, this time inside the box earning him a penalty-kick, which was taken by Frano. He managed to get the shot on target, but could not get past the Panthers' goalkeeper Spyro Stergiotis. In the 70th minute Stergiotis received his first caution for delay of the restart of the game, and he would receive another caution in the 80th minute for a hard tackle on Kadell Thomas. The accumulation of cards of course resulted in Stergiotis being dismissed from the game and quickly Andrew D'Souza would be brought in as a substitution ahead of the penalty kick. Jelani Smith took the penalty but was unable to convert it into a goal as D'Souza blocked the ball but injured himself in the process, which left North Mississauga without an official goalkeeper for the remainder of the game. Sigma's Jelani Smith (88') was able to convert a volley from a corner into a goal, securing the Blues victory. With this victory, Sigma FC now takes over second place with 16 points - one game and three points shy of sharing the top of the table with Toronto FC III. Sigma will travel to Bill Crothers on July 7 (8 p.m.) to take on the Unionville Milliken S.C. On July 7th (9 p.m.), the tenth seated North Mississauga Panthers will host FC London on Paramount Centre Turf 1
