Attendance was about 45 on this mild but wet night with rain alternating hard and light with periods of no rain through the game. There were some gust of winds too as I had propped by umbrella against the standard schoolyard fencing so I could keep writing and a gust blew it over the fence into a trench that had been dug to install some pipes but quite a mudpit on the other side. A 1-1 tie was a fair result. I had no problem with referee Jason Vaillencourt calling the Penalty kick on the ankle kick at 71 minutes. He gave out five Yellow cards (two to Alliance) with some rough stuff helped by the wet field turf which made sliding tackles effective but dangerous. Unionville players tried at least three times to chip the goalie and obvious succeeded on their goal but had the goalie make overhead catches (55 minutes) or shoot wide to not add to their score by that method. Best of the other goal chances were at 59 minutes when AU Nicholas Osorio hit the post from 12 yards when he slid forward to get to a cross. 68 minutes had AU Justin Yarde head from 8 yards that the goalie was able to catch. 88 minutes had UM Richard West scissor kick at 10 yards that the goalie was able to bat down. Tonight was the second time I've been able to see each of these two new teams in L1O this season. Alliance United which is a partnership of Wexford Soccer Club in Scarborough, Markham Soccer Club--just north of this eastern suburb on Toronto, and Centennial College where the L1O games are played. Where do the players come from as it would be tough coming up with a roster from scratch? Just cycling through the game day roster after the game with my own site and Google I found most of their origins. Alliance has picked up quite a few players from the North Toronto Nitros (NTN) roster which had a team in L1O in 2016 and 2017 and an agreement with the University of Toronto but didn't continue at this level but their younger ages are still operating. Coming over were goalie Mark Rogal, and outfield players Devon Bowyer, David Colelli, Anthony Sousa, Jesse Assing, Russell Rodrigues, Connor McFall, Koosha Nazemi, Kevin DaSilva, and (suspended for today's game) Lukas MacNaughton. From Markham's system I found Justin Yarde and Jacob Begley. From Centennial College itself Ostap Hamarnyk and Djimi Guedei. Also with some L1O experience are Nicholas Osorio (age 20) from TFC III snd the USL TFC II. His oldest brother Jonathan has become an MLS Toronto FC regular. (Middle brother Anthony plays for Vaughan Azzurri but he wasn't playing the day I saw them this season). Nikola Stakic also played for TFC III. Goalie Rogal also came through the TFC Academy before his NTN and U of T years. Their goal scorer today Milan Beader was with Vaughan Azzurri last season. Head coach Ilya Orlov played for Vaughan in 2014 then moved into the coaching ranks with both NTN and the U of T. Yikes the Google rabbit hole is deep as I found both Jesse Assing and Lukas MacNaughton are male models with the Sutherland Modeling Agency! Over to Unionville-Milliken SC which had a team in the L1O Women's Division since last season. The men's side has been boosted by the owner of CSL team York Region Shooters (who won their championship last season) shutting them down and bringing his expertise and some of his roster over to this team. A lot of these players are older than the Under-23s that the league puts on the teams' game day rosters. Richard West, Desmond Humphrey, Halburto Harris, Nicolas Martinez, and (suspended for today) Jalen Brome were all players I remember from the 2013 season (the last one I followed the CSL before L1O started up in 2014). Head coach Emanuele Ameltonis was once a goalie for YRS. The team also has some L1O experience with goalie Lucas Birnstingl and Terrence Bernard playing for Toronto Skillz last year, Tre Crosby with Vaughan Azzurri, and Frederick Ameyaw with Aurora FC. Michael Fayehun was a mainstay with Woodbridge Strikers last year. Earlier today he was over at the TFC III vs Aurora FC game taking pictures of the game through his photography business for the league. Lukas Birnstingl was on the bench as the back up goalie for TFC Academy in their first ever game on May 16, 2008 in the CSL against Toronto Croatia that they won 1-0. Just to loop back to Alliance players with CSL links, Oswald Adu played for York Region Shooters last year, goalie Mark Rogal was named CSL '2nd Division Goalie of the Year' while with TFC Academy back in 2012. Goalscorer Milan Beader was with Brantford Galaxy way back, head coach Ilay Orlov was coach of SC Toronto and assistant coach Julian Carr was a defender for London City. More York Region Shooters? Even Alliance had a player with Oswald Adu at least until 2015. Desmond Humphrey whom I hadn't seen since 2013 made an appearance at 61 minutes. He is listed as born in 1980 and that's the oldest player this season I've come across. He still recognized me. I said I remember him as wearing the #77 (not #8 like tonight) and standing beside him was #77 Nicolas Martinez. Back in his early days he used to wear #5 for YRS. Humphrey said he took a two year hiatus from playing and so lost the number. Highest UM number today otherwise was #24. Humphrey is listed on the roster as born 1980. That beats by two years the listing for Stephen Ademolu who played in today's game of Oakville vs Windsor. Next Sunday, all going well, I'll drive to Hamilton with media credentials to watch the Canadian National Women's team take on the German Women.
