May 6, 2018 League 1 Ontario--Vaughan Azzurri vs Toronto Skillz game review (from League 1 Ontario website)
Mahabir Free Kick Sinks Vaughan As Skillz Win 1-0 05/06/2018, 1:45pm EDT By Anthony Gallo Foul trouble and an inability to stay onside hindered the home side Vaughan Azzurri, as they lost 1-0 to Toronto Skillz in Matchweek 2. The first 15 minutes of play saw the Azzurri play the ball from the back, not looking for risky passes and waiting for a hole to punch through Toronto's well-organized backline. Unable to get much past their opponents, Vaughan began to get into foul trouble, earning five fouls before the 35th minute mark. This aggressive style of play would come back to hunt the Azzurri, as a free-kick goal from Skillz winger Tim Mahabir (40') soared over the wall of defenders and tucked right under the crossbar to give the away side a crucial 1-0 lead heading into the half. With only two shots, one of which was on target, Vaughan coach Carmine Isacco brought on striker Tomasz Sklublak in the 61st minute in hopes of creating more offence. Sklublak's big presence and his eye for goal did see the Azzurri create much more goal scoring opportunities. However the striker had trouble staying onside, as two goals were called back due to Vaughan’s number 25 sneaking into offside position. The last 15 minutes of play saw Vaughan throw everything they had at Skillz keeper Peter Katsaras, but Toronto would stay strong as they shutout their opponents 1-0, earning them their first win of the 2018 League1 Ontario season. With this win, the Skillz bounce back from a 5-0 loss in their opening match of the season to last year's champions, Oakville Blue Devils, and sit one point shy of first place in the men's standings by end of competition on Saturday. The Azzurri will look to get back to the win column in Matchweek 3, as they head to Stewart Burnett Park in Aurora to take on Aurora FC on May. 13 (4:00 p.m) Up next for Toronto Skillz will be their first home match of the season, as they take on first year club Alliance United FC on May. 13 (5:00 p.m).
