September 14, 2017 League 1 Ontario--Match Recap: Pro Stars FC vs Toronto Skillz (from League 1 Ontario)
Match Recap: Pro Stars FC 0 - 5 Toronto Skillz 09/14/2017, 7:00pm EDT By League1 Ontario staff Four goals from Toronto Skillz forward Neil Brown (2', 21', 71', 88'), plus a single from teammate Anhr El Eidani (23') and clean sheets from keepers Lucas Birstingl (46 minutes) and Tim Van Gelderen (44 minutes), was more than enough to down Pro Stars 5-0 at Avondale Stadium, Brampton. "We came into the game thinking that this was a must-win for us," said Toronto Skillz head coach, Leslie "Tiger" Fitzpatrick. "Both teams have young squads that we are trying to groom for the future. It's a game that we have been looking at on the calendar and it was postponed twice so we are happy to finally have it out of the way." "We knew with their team that there would be gaps that could open in the back due to some inexperience, so with our pace upfront we thought we could get a lot of joy. You could see in the first ten or fifteen minutes that we opened up the scoring and then from there it was just a matter of trying to put a professional performance on." Both sides have had a difficult season in terms of results, focusing instead on developing a cast of young players upon which future hopes will depend. However, with three wins in the last six matches for Toronto Skillz, and only one draw in 18 matches for Pro Stars - the two groups have clearly had mixed fortunes. "Maybe our players are tired and not able to do two games in one week, but we will look to the future now," said Pro Stars team official Indrit Fortuzzi. "We need to prepare for the next year. Sometimes you learn quite a lot when you lose, but this is too much now. Not a good night." "Today we tried to play our game and take control of the ball. I had hoped we would have scored today on two or three chances but obviously we didn't. We are looking to the next year, that is what we must do at this stage." "We have been steadily improving as the season went on and we have a young squad," said Toronto Skillz' Fitzpatrick. "We have a sixteen year old out there and several seventeen year olds. I think the average age of the team is about nineteen years old." "It's a work in progress and I think we caught a team that is in the same position as us in terms of personnel, and the experience that we have gained throughout the season really helped us coming into a game like this one." "You could see how on the offensive side of the game we were able to create a lot, and on the defensive side we were able to keep a shut-out and get a second keeper in for the second half. It was a complete performance and although we still have a lot to work on." Pro Stars FC will next play Sigma FC on September 16 at Hershey Centre, Mississauga. Toronto Skillz will next play Woodbridge Strikers on September 17 at Vaughan Grove, Woodbridge.
