July 31, 2017 League 1 Ontario--Match Recap: Sigma FC vs Durham United (from League 1 Ontario)
Match Recap: Sigma FC 2 - 2 Durham United FA 07/31/2017, 3:15pm EDT By League1 Ontario staff Sigma FC maintained their unbeaten status and position at the top of men's west division following two goals from Kadell Thomas (3', 45'), but two dismissals and a strong recovery from Durham United FA led to a 2-2 draw on Matchweek 14. "Obviously we scored in the first two minutes of the game and the result was both good and bad," said Sigma head coach, Bobby Smyrniotis. "Sometimes it puts you up for a negative because you can have happen what happened to us today. We kind of relaxed after that goal thinking 'okay we got the goal in the third minute' thinking this is going to come easily," he explained. "And this is one of the most dangerous things. We saw that Durham took over that game for the next twenty minutes of that half and tied up the game, but in the last fifteen minutes I thought we were very good and got the goal." Tyrell Rayne (37') and Le Rohne Young (57') twice brought Durham back to level terms but the east division side could not take advantage of their momentum to win the match. "Excluding the two goals, that were a mistake and we can live with, we went into the dressing room telling the boys that we were the better team," said Durham assistant coach, Felix ?. "If we could put a little bit of the gas on going into the second half we could figure out a way to at least come back and we figured there were goals in us, but to be quite honest with you circumstances took over and even though it was beneficial for us to have them go down a man, there was no flow to the game [at that point]," he added. "It ended up working out in our favour and at least we got the equalizer." Goalscorer Thomas was dismissed in the sixty-first minute, while teammate Manvrir Brar also saw red following his second caution at the eighty-fourth minute, but a nine-man Sigma managed to stick to their "never lose" philosophy and escape with a point. "You just have to change tactics a little bit and sometimes when you get a red card you see a 10-15 minute drop off from a team, where they drop back and defend a little, but but I think after that 10 minutes we did very well and got three chances while playing down to 10 men," said Smyrniotis. "The guys adjusted tactically to the way we wanted them to with 10 men because we didn’t want them to sit back, we wanted them to go for the win, but then we fell to nine men. We continued to try and play and hold on and take the one point today and be happy with it." Sigma FC will next play Oakville Blue Devils on August 3 at Hershey Centre, Mississauga. Durham United FA will next play Pro Stars FC on August 11 at Kinsmen Park Turf, Pickering.
