July 17, 2017 League 1 Ontario--Match Recap: Pro Stars FC vs Vaughan Azzurri (from League 1 Ontario)
Match Recap: Pro Stars FC 1 - 11 Vaughan Azzurri 07/16/2017, 7:30pm EDT By League1 Ontario staff League1 Ontario history was made on Matchweek 12 as Vaughan Azzurri forward and recently selected League1 Ontario Mid-Season All-Star Jarek Whiteman (16', 20', 63', 68', 81', 90', 90' + 2') scored an astonishing seven goals on the way to an 11-1 win by Vaughan over Pro Stars FC. With the seven goal haul, Whiteman shot into the lead in the 2017 League1 Men's Golden Boot race with 14 goals registered in league play. Dante Pavan (27'), Joseph Di Chiara (41'), Aidan O'Hara (72') and Ryan Raposo (90 + 1') added single goals for the Azzurri in a performance that put an end to their recent dip in form in league play. Vaughan coach Patrice Gheisar indicated that the Azzurri had tried a different approach in this match, both tactically and in terms of personnel, both to freshen the team and bring through some of the club's prospects. "We had a lot of younger guys in our team and we were planning to give them a look and have them be involved in the game, perhaps in the second half," said Gheisar. "They have been working hard in training and being patient." "So we spoke as a team about being patient in the first half and absorb the opponent. We have noticed in past games that Pro Stars have had some positive results. I think it was zero zero today until the twenty-fifth minute before things opened up, and we noticed as the game went longer our energy levels went higher. In the second half things changed after they got a red card but in the end our strategy worked out." "We were strategic in our subs," added Gheisar. "We knew they had been defending for much of the game, so we wanted to bring fresh legs to run at them and tire them out, push their back four even further back and create space for us. They were all young players that were eager so they brought good energy to the game and created some goals." The Pro Stars goal was by Adel Rahman (87') in a match that had few highlights for the Brampton-based academy. "This game we had to try some defensive tactics and so we played a bank of four in front of our defenders," explained Pro Stars coach Indrit Fortuzzi. "We tried to do something good, but we were lacking in hard work and were missing quality from individuals. We were missing the work ethic as a whole." "We have to improve the psychology of the players after conceding eleven goals, it will naturally be down after that," he added. "We will be prepared for the next game." Vaughan Azzurri will next play Oakville Blue Devils on July 23 at McNaughton Park, Vaughan. Pro Stars FC will next play Woodbridge Strikers on July 24 at Vaughan Grove, Woodbridge.
