June 12, 2017 League 1 Ontario Match Recap: Sigma FC vs FC London (from League 1 Ontario website)
Match Recap: Sigma FC 0 - 0 FC London 06/12/2017, 10:00am EDT By League1 Ontario staff Clean sheets by FC London's Anthony Sokalaski and Sigma FC's Triston Henry were the highlights of a tightly contested 0-0 draw between two of the west division powerhouses on Matchweek Seven. "We expected what we saw out of London, they are a very organized team," said Sigma head coach Bobby Smyrniotis. "They sat back and soaked up pressure." "I thought we did a very good job in the first half, we had shots, we had opportunities to get it, and it just didn't come. The thought process at half-time was keep up the same thing and just be a little bit sharper on the defensive end because you can fall asleep sometimes from that aspect." Sigma went down a man at the hour mark, and the dismissal marked a clear change in momentum in favour of London. "In the sixtieth minute or so the dynamic of the game changed with the red card," agreed Smyrniotis. "That changed things. London became a little more aggressive in their play, which pushed us back especially as we were playing with one less man, but we did have a few chances after that point." "All in all, I'm happy with the guys although we have not really been firing one hundred per cent on the attacking aspect in the last two weeks of games. Looking at the circumstances, and playing down a man for thirty minutes, we'll take the tie today." FC London assistant coach Eddie Schmidt was happy with the way his team implemented certain tactical points to deal with Sigma, and rued a missed opportunity to win the match. "I think we played a perfect tactical game today, our players stuck perfectly to the gameplan," said Schmidt. "You could see in the first half that we wanted to press them high and that is because Sigma's players are another level. They are the best team in the league, that's for sure in terms of individuals, and if you give them space to play - especially in behind your fullbacks - the winger on the left side especially will kill you. We tried to prevent this and were quite good at preventing it." "The second half we became a little more aggressive and then of course they got a red card. After that point we fully took control of the game and you could see Sigma couldn't run anymore. We had chances but just like last week we could not score a goal from our chances against ten men." Sigma FC will next play Masters FA Saints on June 17 at Hershey Centre, Mississauga. FC London will next play Vaughan Azzurri on June 17 at German Canadian Club, London.
