Match Recap: Aurora FC 2 - 4 Vaughan Azzurri 06/05/2017, 9:00am EDT By League1 Ontario staff After a game that appeared to have everything for the neutral onlooker - including a goal in the first minute, then two sets of goals for each team within a minute of each other - Vaughan Azzurri finally beat Aurora FC 4-2 at St. Maximillian Kolbe H.S. on Saturday. "If you look at the chances, I think we had about four or five clear cut chances in the first twenty minutes," said Aurora head coach, Derek O'Keeffe. "That's the difference of the game. You score those chances, the way we were playing with so many counters, you're in, you're okay. That's always the difference. You score your chances, you're okay, you don't score them and you give space for these boys to come back into it. They took their advantage." Chris Mannella (1') was the first to score for Vaughan, before Aurora woke up and went ahead with goals from Justin Broome (23') and Ali Sozeri (25'). Then it was Vaughan's turn to duplicate, with Thomas Skublak (32') and Jarek Whiteman (33') sticking two away within a minute to give the visitors a remarkable 3-2 lead heading into the interval. Both sides would trade opportunities in the second half, but it was Vaughan talisman and former Canadian international Joseph Di Chiara (57') that would ultimately land the knockout punch with his goal just ahead of the hour mark. "We had a very very early goal from an incredible start, but that allowed us to perhaps take our foot off the pedal and we had to react after giving up two goals against," said Vaughan assistant coach, Patrice Gheisar. "We adjusted and did ok, but it was a good game - back and forth, lots of goals." "Going down two goals allowed us to see what they guys are made of because what happens of course is it is not something that went by script," he added. "We wanted to have the lead and keep the lead but they bounced back. Credit to them, two great goals right away and our guys pushed hard and had the belief to get the second, third and the fourth. It was a good mentality from our guys." Aurora's O'Keeffe was happy with his team's overall work-rate, but felt it was the little details that allowed the result to elude the home side. "Simple mistakes let them down," he said. "I don't fault their effort at all." "I think a little quality at times in their decision making, like kicking it short on a high press when you should be going long or using the wrong foot, passing when you should be dribbling, dribbling when you should be passing." "Small details like that, quality in decision making, hurt us at times." Aurora FC will next play Toronto Skillz on Sunday June 11 at Birhmount Stadium, Scarborough. Vaughan Azzurri will next play Woodbridge Strikers on Sunday June 10 at McNaughton Turf, Vaughan.
