April 30, 2017 League 1 Ontario Match Recap: Vaughan Azzurri vs Durham United FA (from League 1 Ontario website)
Match Recap: Vaughan 0 - 0 Durham United FA 04/30/2017, 9:15pm EDT By League1 Ontario staff Two of the men's east division powerhouses clashed on Matchday Two of L1O Kickoff 2017, and when the dust settled the hosts and defending League1 Ontario champions Vaughan Azzurri had to share the points in a scoreless draw with Durham United FA. "It was a good game," said Vaughan head coach, Carmine Isacco. "We knew in the first twenty minutes we would be challenged and if we weathered the storm we could come back and create the tempo of the game and I thought we did that alright." "I thought we created enough chances to win the game. I think they did a good job minimizing spaces in the final third in the second half, but we weren't as sharp as we should have been and I could say that's expected for the first game of the season but that's not an excuse - we should have been better." Vaughan was playing in front of a large crowd, on hand at the marquee event to kick off the 2017 men's season and see a small presentation ceremony to the Azzurri captains of the trophies from their title and cup winning season. Durham head coach Sanford Carabin was happy with the way his side started, especially in such difficult surroundings. "We're more than happy to walk away from them with a point," said Carabin. "We would've been happy with three points but a it's good start not conceding a goal and and taking a point away." Despite the lack of goals and thus a victory for either side on the day, both sets of coaches were happy with the performances in some respects, taking positives and preparing for next steps in the season. "Positives are that we dealt with the transition defending fairly well, and our shape was... okay," said Isacco. "We had some players playing out of position and they stepped up to the challenge." We had some players missing that are key to our success as well but we showed that we have some depth. That's a positive for sure, but I think we need to be better in the final third, we need to have more of killer instinct for sure. But credit to Durham." "Team goal for today was to not concede, so I think you know what we we gained in being more defensive today in the second half," said Carabin. "We obviously suffered a bit going forward, which is not typical of us," he added. "But they [have] been the most consistent team the last few years, they don't give up a lot of goals and they can catch [and] they can punish you if you switch off," he concluded. Vaughan will next play Toronto Skillz on Saturday May 6 at McNaughton Turf, Vaughan. Durham will next play Woodbridge Strikers on Sunday May 7 at Vaughan Grove, Woodbridge.
