Blue Devils sign League 1 Goalkeeper of the season Matt George By OBD FC January 10, 2017 OAKVILLE, ON — Oakville Blue Devils FC are pleased to announce the signing of Matt George for the 2017 League 1 Ontario season. Matt has established himself as a regular League 1 Ontario All-Star, together with winning the Goalkeeper of the Year award the past two seasons. “This is an excellent boost for our program during our off season rebuilding phase” commented Head Coach Duncan Wilde. “We are adding several new young exciting players to our roster and Matt will provide that vital guidance and leadership that all teams require, to sustain a long and challenging season.” We caught up with Matt during the recent off-season training session…. OBD: What was your main motivation for joining the Blue Devils organization? Matt G: Joining a prestigious club like the Oakville Blue Devils with a tradition of winning is something that I could not pass up. Furthermore, with the new CPL on the horizon, and my ambition to play at a higher level, Duncan’s contacts will be invaluable. OBD… Outline your personal and team ambitions for the 2017 season. Matt G: As a team and a squad like this, with the quality of players that the Blue Devils continue to develop, anything short of winning the league and league cup is a down year. Whenever I step on the pitch I am looking to win. I have a league Cup Championship under my belt already and I have experienced the league title slip out from under me two years running. Personally, I am looking to move onto the next level, and I feel having a head coach like Duncan Wilde will provide me an opportunity to do just that. Also, maintaining my All Star status and adding a third Goalkeeper of the Year award is something I will continue to strive for. OBD: Can you talk about your role also with regards to coaching in the Blue Devils Academy? Matt G: Coaching is something that I want to do when my playing days are done! I am looking forward to being coached by Glenn McNamara and also working under his guidance within the Junior Academy program. I helped to train the kids during my time with Woodbridge and the ability to show someone younger than you your own methods and work rate is something I very much enjoy doing. OBD: So, some big changes and new challenges to look forward to? Matt G: Very much so. I would like to thank Woodbridge for the past three seasons. They helped me grow as a person and as a player and I have nothing but praise for Peter, John and the rest of the Woodbridge Soccer Club. I wish them all a great season and I’ll be excited to plays against my former teammates when that time comes in 2017.
