Lynx Do Themselves In
An own goal ends Toronto's ten gaming losing streak.

from Sports Report Service

HEMPSTEAD, NY--An own goal with two minutes to play ended the A-League's longest winning streak Saturday, as the Long Island Rough Riders (7-6) edged the Toronto Lynx 1-0 at Hofstra Stadium. A crowd of 6,860, second-highest in Rough Riders history, was on hand as Toronto (10-3) lost for the first time in 11 games.

A Toronto defender deflected Jim Rooney's corner kick past goalie Pat Onstad to decide the game. The Rough Riders dominated the tired Lynx, who were playing their third game in four days, racking up a 14-7 shot advantage and 12-3 edge in corner kicks.

Rooney and Daniel Leon both sent shots just wide in the first half, and Toronto goalie Pat Onstad robbed Leon of an apparent sure chance in the second. In the 82nd minute, Long Island's Carlos Ledesma sent a 25-yard shot caroming off the inside of the post and sailing harmlessly out of play.

Rough Riders goalie Manny Carou made a game-saving play in the 31st minute, charging out of the area to stop a breakaway by Toronto scoring leader Darren Tilley.

Despite the loss, the Lynx remain seven points ahead of Rochester at the top of the Northeast Division. The Rhinos also lost Saturday, 2-1 to Raleigh.
