The Atletico players looked stunned and initially only Carl Haworth comes over to applaud the travelling fans.
The PA announcer had promised an autograph signing in the south end zone from the start of the game and there was
a huge gathering of York players and fans.

Attendance wasn't announced but there looked to be a good size crowd for this last home game of the season. There were a few hundred cheering for Ottawa as at least one charter bus came to the grounds with tweets] of their progress. They'd have had to start very early as it's a four or five hour drive. After the game the York players were signing autographs in the south end and it's the most fans I remember ever seeing hanging around after a game.

One late goal decided this game as Kevin Santos was fed a short pass in the Ottawa box on the left by Jeremy Gagnon-Lapare and he first nutmegged defender Diego Espejo and then rolled a six yard shot into the right corner of the net. Just had to hang on for two more minutes and seven minutes of injury time but instead of bunkering in, it looked like York was most likely to score a second goal.

This was a huge win for York after losing their first three games in a row in a four game home stand. This was the game to win as they flipped over fellow strugglers Atletico into the final playoff position with one regular season game to go. This was only their fourth league home win of the season. They had only scored two goals in their last three games until today. York have had no first half goals since August 5th and no first half home goals since June 21st (so those records are extended).

Atletico have been giving up late goals over the last month to turn ties into losses and tumble down the table. They are now winless in the last seven with five of them in stoppage time. I was thinking it was too much to hope for that this would happen again as York just had to win this game or they'd finish sixth. I thought near the end they'd push upfield and leave themselves short at the back and Ottawa might score the late goal.

York weren't going to make up their U-21 minute requirements tonight. They had defender Noah Abatneh as their only U-21 starter and he lasted until 80 minutes when he was replaced by fellow U-21 midfielder Kadin Martin-Pereux so they at least get credit for 90 minutes. The only other U-21 on tonight's roster was back up goalie Eleias Himaras.

Referee David Barrie gave out six Yellow cards (four to Atletico with four coming after the 80th minute as play was a lot more scrambly. I was told before the game that this would be David Barrie's final game to officiate. Well good for him but I thought he'd deserve at least a playoff game for his good service which I'd followed well before this league got started.

Both teams warmed up in orange t-shirts for the 'Every Child Matters' campaign.

After the game, Atletico goalie/captain Nathan Ingham at the press conference said it was time for the leaders on the team to step up to stop this skid. Kevin Santos couldn't help but smile when it was his time to speak at the York press conference.

York's record improves to 10 wins, 5 ties, 12 losses for 35 points. Ottawa's record falls to 9 wins, 6 ties, 12 losses for 33 points. York now holds the fifth and final playoff spot. Next weekend York plays on Friday night on the road against Vancouver FC who are can't make the playoffs but have won their last three games. Atletico travels to Hamilton to play Forge FC on Saturday. If York win then it doesn't matter what Ottawa do but if they lose of tie, Ottawa can hop back over them with 36 points. A tie for York and a win for Ottawa give Ottawa the fifth spot with a better goal difference.
