Final Score:...York United.........1..........Pacific FC..........4..........
Attendance was not announced but one of our guys found the number posted on the CPL website in a story. It was 1151. That isn't great but the club has made an effort this game with a theme night named “Newcomers Night”. There were something like 250 children from an organization called “New Six”. It is made up of recent immigrants to the Toronto area. It looked like each child was given a York United FC scarf unlike any that were on sale or in the season ticket package. This will be a quite useful item in a few months as the kids will be wearing them for warmth but what a adversement for the team in a sport that every country in the world knows well. I didn't expect York would still be in the playoff hunt at all after losing their last game on Friday September 8th against Valour FC, the first game of that weekend. The remaining games ended with two ties and a win for last place Vancouver FC to keep York in the running. Then the midweek games took place to finally catch four of the teams up with York in number of games played and one of those ended in a tie and another first place Cavalry increased their lead and appear uncatchable. York had the last game of this weekend and it was another must win game as Cavalry pulled further ahead and Forge won just an hour before this game to make a three team runaway pack with Pacific. The HFX Wanderers vs Atletico Ottawa game scheduled for yesterday was postponed until Monday because of Hurricane Lee cutting off power to much of the city. Both teams are ahead of York but only one game can earn points (you would think) and York will be chasing the losing team for the fifth and last playoff spot...except I believe with this effort, York won't be chasing anything. This was supposed to be a celebration for Max Ferrari who today set a record for most appearances with York 9/United FC with 77...passing Diyaeddine Abzi who transferred to Pau FC in France last year. Ferrari was even given the captain's armband today but didn't have a good game, just like the rest of the defence, and was subbed off at halftime. York fell behind at 10 minutes. That time seemed vaguely familiar and I looked back and it was just one minute sooner then when they gave up the first goal against Vancouver FC right here on August 25. That game they were able to recover from and win. This was the fifth game in a row where York has given up the first goal. Pacific had only three days to four days to recover from their Wednesday game against Atletico Ottawa. They stayed in Ontario for the days in between. York's last game was last Friday at home against Valour FC. You'd think York would have more energy than the visiting team? York had to return young goalkeeper Adisa De Rosario to York Lions Stadium co-tenants Toronto FC II of the MLS NEXT Pro league as his loan was recalled. TFC II had their first string goalie Luka Gavran called up to the MLS team as a back up. De Ro was in net for New York City FC II on Saturday night in a 3-3 tie but lost 4-1 in Penalty kicks for the bonus point given for a shoot out victory after a tie in regulation. They only have one more game and their season is over. That will be next Sunday afternoon when they host first place Crown Legacy FC (the reserve team of MLS Charlotte FC). TFC II were knocked out of the playoff race the week before. It was expected that York's regular goalie Niko Giantsopoulos would get the start now that he's over his injury but York was using ADR's time in net to build up their 2000 required U-21 minutes. Today they had Trivine Esprit as a starting midfielder with only back up goalie Eleias Himaras and midfielder Kadin Martin-Pereux as the only U-21s of the bench. Martin-Pereux was brought on at 60 minutes but even at 90 + 30 =120 is slightly below the minutes they require to make the 2000. I asked around today and if they don't make the playoffs (less than 2000 U-21 minutes make a team ineligible to compete in the playoffs no matter what their record) they will just be subject to a monetary fine. That was a laugh as pointed out that the league temporarily own York while they search for new owners and it would be just one hand passing on the money to the other. York was without the services of U-21 defender Noah Abatneh who is serving a Red card suspension after last week's sliding tackle. Mo Babouli drew two late Yellows in that game for argueing calls and missed today which made the offense even more toothless. The second Pacific goal at 17 minutes put the game away and involved a goal-of-the-year candidate which included a backheeler pass in the box from Djanairo Daniels in a crowd of players that allowed Sean Young to roll in a shot from 10 yards. Manny Aparicio scored the third goal on a header. He was celebrating his 27th birthday today in front of relatives in his hometown. He played in the first CPL game ever in 2019 in Hamilton with York 9 FC tying with Forge FC 1-1. Aparicio had an assist and took a second Yellow for hand ball in that game. Pacific also has local Ontario players (besides Aparicaio) with Steffen Yeates, Kunle Dada-Luke, and Adonijah Reid who I watched over the years in League1 Ontario and TFC II. York loses their second game in a row in a four game homestand. Head coach Martin Nash mentioned he wished he could reschedule because they play so well on the road and I think he was only half joking. Their next game is Saturday afternoon against Cavalry and then Sunday afternoon October 1 hosting Atletico Ottawa. They finish the following Friday night away to Vancouver FC. Looks like York will finish one spot out of the playoffs even with the expansion to five teams out of eight making the post season.Rocket Robin
