Attendance wasn't announced but I found it listed on the Canadian Premier League website as 1118. That wasn't as good as their last game. The school year started this week and parents weren't as likely to bring their kids to a game. The game was at an earlier time slot that the summer games. Half an hour earlier makes a big difference fighting rush hour traffic to get here. I found out why as broadcaster One Soccer was going to shoehorn in another game at '7:00pm' except at Pacific time so they could bridge this game ending at just after 9:00pm with their post match and pregame before the Pacific vs HFX Wanderers game at 10:00pm. OK but that makes Atlantic time viewers know the game starts at 11:00pm their time. One Soccer also bullied York into changing their September 22nd game on Friday night against Cavalry which would have started at 7:30pm to Saturday afternoon at 1:00pm. The reason is they want to use the Friday night timeslot to show the Canada vs Jamaica Women's Olympic Qualifying match in Jamaica. OK at the beginning of the season they wouldn't know that Canada would have to play a qualifier nor against whom so I could see moving the game but this playoff series was known months ago so the switched CPL game date shold have been announced with much more than two weeks notice! Pregame comments from head coach Martin Nash were that York had to start off faster but they were almost behind at 2 minutes but goalie Adisa De Rosario made a great sliding foot save to keep Valour off the board. I saw the officiating crew arrive and do their pre game field inspections wearing maroon coloured shirts. Hmm. That is the colours of Valour for this game. I mentioned this could be an omen in the pressbox but not taking my own comments seriously but the Red card call was the turning point of the game. I was not at a good angle and didn't see the studs up part of the challenge. Mo Babouli was given the captain's armband tonight with Niko Giantosopoulos and Roger Thompson not in tonight's lineup. If he thought that could give him more freedom in what he could say to the officiating crew, he was mistaken as he picked up two Yellow cards within two minutes, both in second half injury time, and now will miss the next game. I asked later if because of previous Yellow card troubles that would mean more than a one game suspension but head coach Martin Nash answered me after the game that he only suspects he will miss one. Some players had to be restrained after the game as the crew made their exit or things would have been worse. Referee Mathieu Souare gave out three Yellow cards to Valour, one Yellow to York, then one straight Red to York and two Yellows equal a Red for another sending off and one to someone on the York bench just after the second Valour goal. There were a lot of whistles and other calls that he was not popular with York fans and players. Tonight's theme night was 'Mental Health Awareness'. Maybe anger management was needed by some of the players. York is still a long way off reaching the 2000 U-21 minimum required for qualifying for the playoffs (besides finishing top five in the standings). It looked good that they were starging Adisa De Rosario in goal which should provide 90 minutes. Also defender Noah Abatneh starting could make another 90. They also had three U-21s on the bench. Much like the time earlier in the season when they started young Markiyan Voytsekhovskyy and he only lasted until the 9 minute mark. Then it turned out it took them weeks to rule him out for the entire season. So 90 U-21 minutes for Adisa De Rosario, 37 for Abatneh until he was sent off. Now at 62 minutes, York brought on midfielders Trivine Esprit and Kadin Martin-Pereux (making his debut). These subs were made before scoring threats Brian Wright and Osaze De Rosario were brought on. 80 minutes they brought in midfielder Carlso Buschman-Dormand for ten minutes of credits. I figure that knocks 193 minutes off their requirement in this one game so maybe that's one of the few benefits they get from this night. Forward Osaze De Rosario was subbed on at 71 minutes which made the first home game this season that the brothers have been on the field at the same time. Adisa game over on a loan deal from Toronto FC II of MLS NEXT Pro more than a month ago but Osaze was serving a suspension. Their father Dwayne could be seen on the other side of the field (the olive coloured box seats along the east cheering them on. Dante Campbell scored his first CPL goal tonight. Just two years ago he was captain of Toronto FC II which is now a co-tenant in this stadium but back then played in a different league and at their their training facility. I had watched him since his TFC III days in League1 Ontario. He had a brief on-loan spell at Valour back in 2020. After leaving Toronto FC II after the 2021 season, he spent a year with LA Galaxy II before finding his way back to Valour on a full contract. He said after the game, he and the other GTA teammates get a special thrill playing here. The 'Poutine & More' truck was the only food truck here tonight. This now turns out to be the last Friday night home game of the season so we'll have to see if they can boost that back up to three. Valour won their second road game all season. Their first road win was here back on April 16th in the season opener for both teams. York extends their record as the worst win record for a home team but the best for an away team. They started a four game home stretch and this game would have been the easiest (on paper) to obtain a result. The late goal means at least fans got to hear the Vengaboys song at least once. The loss drops York's record to 9 wins, 5 ties, 10 losses for 32 points. That should put them in sixth just out of the final playoff spot but with all the other teams ahead of them still to play this weekend, they should fall further behind the teams they are chasing. I guess what they hope is that all the other teams tie. Valour's record improves to 5 wins, 8 ties, 10 losses for 23 points. They stay in seventh. There were scenarios I read before the game that would have had Valour be eliminated from the playoffs with a result today but they hold on for another week. This was only their 21 first goal tonight in 23 games which until tonight was lowest in the league.Rocket Robin
