York United FC midfielder Brem Soumaoro has been named in the Liberia squad for their upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifier with Morocco and the subsequent international friendly with Ghana.

The 26-year-old has been in superb form throughout his debut Canadian Premier League season, scoring twice and adding one assist in his 20 appearances so far. His central midfield partnership with Jérémy Gagnon-Laparé has been a key reason for some excellent recent performances from The Nine Stripes and a run of form that's seen back-to-back wins and just one defeat from the last five fixtures.

Soumaoro now turns his attention to The Lone Stars, who face a high-profile trip to take on a side who shocked so many with their fourth-place finish at the 2022 World Cup.

Drawn in Group K, Liberia are already out of contention for next year's tournament in Cote D’Ivoire despite some excellent displays. Having succumbed to a 2-0 defeat to Morocco in their opening fixture (a game in which Soumaoro captained the side), the team faced South Africa in a pair of crucial qualifiers. The first one - in Johannesburg - saw Liberia grab an injury-time equalizer to secure a massive away point and set up a must-win battle back home in Movrovia four days later. However, there was no storybook ending and the 2-1 loss meant their qualification hopes were over.

Still, the team will be hoping to finish the campaign with a strong performance against a high-calibre opponent. Afterwards, Soumaoro will travel to Accra with his team-mates for a friendly clash on Tuesday afternoon with another continental powerhouse, Ghana, before he returns to Canada in time for another big CPL game against Pacific FC at York Lions Stadium on Sunday, September 17.
