Final Score:...York United.........2..........Vancouver FC..........1..........

Attendance was not announced and I wasn't able to find it on a fan website. It looked about average. They hadn't played a home game since four weekends ago. There was a tennis tournament at York University covering two of those weekends. I found out how huge that was watching the crowds walking on the sidewalks as I drove by to get to League1 Ontario games. There were even signs directing patrons to the TTC lots above Steeles Avenue. I park there because it's free on weekends and only $2 after 3:00pm weeknights but I don't expect there were bargains like that for this event. The huge lot is to encourage people to take the subway downtown.

Also much of the excitement had been killed off by the team not scoring at home for the last three games. That's nine and a half weeks. (A 2-2 tie with HFX Wanderers on Wednesday June 21st). That's a long time to not hear the Vengaboys song played after every York home goal. The team is still in the playoff race, although fading, because they have a fairly good record on the road. They had a pair of 3-3 ties before their loss last weekend to first place Cavalry FC on this latest road trip. I'd forgotten that the York victory song was "Can't Touch This" by MC Hammer.

Fans were lining up in the end zone to get free hot dogs from league sponsor Maple Lodge Farms. That sponsor is always there but the line has never been that long...can't beat Free! Their food is made from chicken meat. I didn't see that offer before the game but if it had been announced in the weeks before, they might have drawn in some more casual fans who would not show up without some convincing.

Osaze De Rosario is still under suspension for a drug infraction, incurred last year but only appied within the last few weeks. Younger brother Adisa played in goal tonight making some important saves and helping the team make their U-21 minutes (or they can't participate in the playoffs no matter how good their record). The agreement with Toronto FC II is he is on-loan for the rest of the season. TFC probably regretted that move almost immediately as their MLS first team goalie Sean Johnson almost immediately broke his hand and the chain of command in goalies had to move up. TFC II first stringer Luka Gavran moved up to the first team to sit on the bench while TFC II use Gianluca Catalano who they had on a short term loan from League1 Ontario team Vaughan Azzurri although that loan has stretched to months. Now the TFC II backup goalie is a 17 year old from their Academy. The next day in Barrie at a L1O playoff game I saw their father Dwayne De Rosario who was doing a public appearance for Simcoe County Rovers and said something like "I am waiting to finally see your sons on the field at the same time" and he responded "So am I". Toronto FC II does play at York Lions Stadium but usually on alternate weekends from York United home dates.

Goalie Adisa was the only U-21 in the starting line up. That is usually a sure way to earn 90 minutes for the league's season minimum of 2000 minutes. They are behind the target by quite a bit and need to average something like 120 minutes a game. I was thinking that would take one U-21 to sub in by 60 minutes or two by 75 minutes. Some in the press box came up with some other combos.

York didn't make any substitutions until 74 minutes when they brought in Austin Ricci for Max Ferrari. Both are older than 21. Hey but 7 miutes later Ricci scores the winning goal. First U-21 subs were brought in at 81 minutes with Noah Abatneh coming in to replace Clement Bayiha. Young Trivine Esprit came on at 91 minutes so that won't add to their team minutes! Interesting that the team worked on getting the Red card picked up last week for Carson Buschman-Dormand sucessfully rescinded and had him on the bench but didn't use him. He's still waiting for his home debut.

I noticed right at the start from the lineup sheet that Vancouver had only brought five subs. I asked at the press conference after the game was it injuries or suspensions why their bench was so thin. Head coach Afshin Ghotbi answered that it is a choice by their ownership and he has to get by with these budgeting decision. When they go on an extended road trip, he said they bring a few more players. I was surprised and think it doesn't shine a good light on the league. I suspect I should be grateful for York that when they go on the road, they appear to have a full bench of seven even though this year they are owned by the league and could see an internal rule like that being imposed to save a bit of money.

Pre game comments from York head coach Martin Nash said the team needed to have a fast start but they were behind 1-0 by the 10 minute mark on a defensive giveaway. I thought York was playing well after this but they were well into the second half before they could score via a Penalty kick call.

I could see later in a brief highlight reel put out by the league that York were fortunate to get away with a hand ball in their box and York defender Roger Thompson tripping a Vancouver player and not getting a Pwnalty call. Either one of these giving Vancouver a Penalty kick would most likely have changed the result.

This was the first game of the weekend and so for now it moves York up to a tie for fifth place with a record of 8 wins, 5 ties, 9 losses for 29 points. With the teams ahead of them playing later, I don't know if they'd like all the other teams play to ties or for some of the power house teams keep winning and York try to move up one or two spots.

Vancouver's record falls to 4 wins, 5 ties, 12 losses for 17 points. They had been to York in mid-April and were beaten 1-0 in the preliminary round of the Canadian Championship in a midweek game, then stayed in town and beat York in a regular season game that weekend. Interesting that at the time York's record dropped to 0-0-2 for last place and Vancouver with a 1 win, 1 loss record were in third because of other teams tying so many games early in the season. Within two days of that result, the league announced they had taken over ownership of York.

Vancouver had beaten then first place team Pacific FC 3-2 at home last weekend. This will probably be the highlight of their season in the league's second darby-match cities. (York vs Forge was the first).

The York win at home is encouraging as York finishes their regular schedule with four of their last six games at home. The leading reason they aren't doing better is their home record is just not good at all. We'll see after this weekend (they play in Halifax on Labour Day) with those four games all in a row if they can build from tonight's game.
