York United FC announced on Thursday that winger Markiyan Voytsekhovskyy has been ruled out for the remainder of the
2023 season due to injury.
The 19-year-old sustained a knock to his left foot and was substituted after just 10 minutes of The Nine Stripes’ 2-2 home
draw against Halifax Wanderers on June 22. Medical tests later showed a fracture of the fifth metatarsal (Jones fracture)
and a 12-week recovery time has been recommended. Only then will the teenager be ready to return to full contact and
an additional time period will be required for him to gain proper match fitness and sharpness.
“We are all really disappointed for Marki,” says Angus McNab, York United FC’s CEO/President and GM.
“He’s been developing every week and was critical to our plans, especially given the league’s Under-21 requirements.
We knew with age and the competitive nature of earning minutes that it would take him time to properly settle into
the squad and find his stride. Still, this comes at a particularly bad moment for him as he had been back in the starting
lineup and was potentially set to feature more prominently in subsequent games.”
“However, Marki going on the season-ending injury list does mean we open up another roster spot and we will look to fill
this quickly.”
Voytsekhovskyy has made eight appearances in all competitions this season- his debut professional campaign and very first
with York United – and has found the net once: in the 2-1 home defeat to Vancouver FC in late-April.
