Attendance was not announced but it wasn't expected to be big as it was a rare midweek game with an early starting time of 7:00pm which would impact people driving up from downtown in the rush hour. Internet message boards had some saying it was 1018 which sounds conveniently like their usual range just to get it above 1000. There wouldn't be much traveling support as Halifax is quite a few hours away even by airplane. Their support would come from many of the players' families with three players and two coaches from the Vaughan Azzurri alone. Tonight there was a concious effort to build U-21 minutes by starting a young goalie, Eleias Himaras (with young Ivan Pavela as back up) and midfielder Markiyan Voytsekhovskyy. York trails the league in U-21 minutes and this year not making the standard costs a fine like before but stops a team from entering the playoffs. So goalies are expected to play 90 and an outfield player 60 or 70 right? Oops. Voytsekhovskyy was subbed after only 9 minutes after suffering an injury. We weren't told if it was serious enough that he will miss more than the rest of tonight's game. Last year York passed the U-21 minute mark in something like their fourth game but got off to a slow start so this is a different strategy this season to go with a more experienced line up this year and get the younger players in as substitutions late in the game or in the few 'three games a week' times on the calendar. Wanderers head coach Patrice Gheisar said after the game that he thought HFX could get the winning goal as he noticed that York players looked tired after seeing defender Tass Mourdoukoutas being subbed out at halftime and York punting balls upfield trying to hold their lead in the second half. York are not so used to ttavelling cross country twice in a week whereas HFX has to fly to every game from the East coast. Midfielder Ronan Kratt who has not played a game for York this season just signed a contract with German club Werder Bremen but that doesn't open up a spot on their roster as they'd already planned on him not returning according to how head coach Martin Nash answered me after the game. York loses points again in this game dropping two with the goal given up at 85 minutes tonight. On Sunday, Pacific FC scored at 88 minutes with a 1-0 win in what was almost one point earned in a tough away game. Pacific had hosted the game before York's hot streak winning 4-1 but Sunday must be considered a disappointment with the time of the goal. The tie improves York's record to 5 wins, 2 ties, 5 losses for 17 points and they take over sole position of second place which they'd shared with Forge FC until tonight. The game in Victoria starting minutes after this game ended had Pacific FC winning 1-0 over Valour FC and Pacific now open a 7 point lead on York with a game in hand on their two closest pursuers. First place guarantees nothing but home games through the entire playoffs. Wanderers' record improves to 2 wins, 7 ties, 2 losses for 13 points and are all alone in fourth place. Top five teams make the playoffs but at most one home playoff date. York now travel to Calgary for a game Saturday afternoon against Cavalry FC.Rocket Robin
