Final Score:...York United.........2..........Atletico Ottawa..........1..........

Attendance was not announced but it looked about the size of their previous Friday night crowds (which means not as large as a weekend crowd). I was disappointed as I expected the crowd would larger because of the promotion from the league and team for the Pride festivities. I thought the new fans drawn for this from the LGBTQ community would more than make up for the people who were not supportive or them and would not come this one game. Also the team was building an undefeated streak--well three in a row but in this season of so many ties between other teams that has raised York's position in the standings quite quickly.

The air quality was certainly better than it was the two previous days. The air had reminded me of the smoke from a campfire. Very appropriate as their was smoke from out of control forest fires from northern Ontario and Quebec. The harmful smell had been the reason why youth soccer practices were cancelled and students recesses were held inside.

When I saw the lineup sheet and five names 'Unavailable' but not in the injured or suspended categories I felt the same despair from last year and the first games of this season with the long injury list.

The reason given was these players wouldn't agree to wear the special Pride kit the team was wearing tonight. It was wasn't much different than there all-white kits except that the numbers were in a harder-to-see rainbow colours which made it hard to tell between '10' and '18'. Also there was a small rainbow cuff on the jersey and a sponser from a cider maker.

Objecting were Brian Wright, Oussama Alou, Mo Babouli, Bream Soumauro, and Maki Voytsekhovskyy. Hmm can't say they're all Islamic nor far-tight Christian. I think any player in the world objects to an alcohol company (Carlsberg is the official kit sponsor this season). I know the club made accomodations in the previous month when some players were 'fasting' for religious reasons.

Anyway when I asked at the post game press conference about these players warning the team about their objections, head coach Martin Nash answered that the players had given them appropriate notice and the team filled the bench with call ups. So the bench included League1 Ontario players Trivine Espirit from Simcoe County Rovers (who was the only one who got to play), Camilo Vasconcelos of Guelph United and Anthony Morano of North Mississauga SC (these last two were only age 16. It would have been great to see those to into the game as this year York finds themselves last among teams for compiling the requirement of minutes for U-21 players. If York hadn't been protecting a precarious one goal lead, I think they would have gotten a run out. Toby Richardson is a 17 year old defender from the Ottawa area. He's a defender and is a red haired like the Ottawa striker Ollie Bassett. Richardson has been signed to a development deal earlier in the season. A writer for the league confirmed that this year if the U-21 minutes are not met, the team can't qualify for the playoffs which is more serious than previous years of a fine being the only punishment.

Atletico were unlucky to not get a result as they hit the goalpost three times. Any of these going in would have changed the momentum. Also York's tieing goal was awarded as an 'own goal' on a header into his own net.

Atletico were credited with 14 shots but only 2 on net. Well now I know hitting the post doesn't count as a shot on net! York took 6 shots with 3 on target.

Referee Scott Bowman gave out only two Yellow cards (one to each side) and did not have to judge any fake penalty calls as the game was full of end to end action.

The result lifts York United into first place for this one night as it was the only game of today. The game between Forge FC hosting Pacific FC on Saturday will vault one of those teams into first even it is in a tie. Hey a four game undefeated run and three of them wins. York is now 4 wins, 4 losses, 1 tie for 13 points.

Teams have started to go through their second cycle through the teams. York beat Ottawa 1-0 in Ottawa back on April 29th.

Atletico Ottawa's record falls to 2 wins, 2 losses, 5 ties for 8 points and holds in sixth place but may be passed by other teams later this weekend.

York moves on to play Pacific FC in Victoria BC next Sunday where they'd been beaten 4-1 on May 14th.
