Attendance was not announced but I read a message on Fotmob almost immediately that it was 1476. The game started with a built in crowd of 120 more than two hours before this game started at the halftime of a special League1 Ontario game between GTA teams Woodbridge Strikers and Vaughan Azzurri. From game sheets I received while covering that game, I counted four former players and an assistant coach that were on the York United FC or the early years York 9 FC. Some message board poster said this estimate would only be believable if the 120 were included as he thought some went home. Hmm yeah it would be a five hour day in the hot sun. The weather was hot and sunny for both games. Ironic it turns out that we Season Seat Holders received an e-mail a few days earlier that our scarfs were finally ready. Now April would have been the time that we really could have used them in the stands. York head coach Martin Nash got to field a starting eleven identical to the one used the week before for the first time this season. They won that game on the road in Halifax 3-0 by getting off to a fast start. It is Nash's style to continue with what works and returning players have to earn their way back on the team. Today looked like their strongest bench of the season with some roster regulars being healthy scratches and not even making the bench. Matthew Baldisimo picked up an injury in added time in the second half and needed the trainer but a stretcher was waved off. I guess the injury list starts a slow build again. York had made their five subs and since this wasn't a head injury they just had to play short at the end of the game. Cavalry were trying to draw a Penalty kick with a few soft falls that referee Ben Hoskins wasn't convinced to call and later he ignored some that could have been legit. He gave out three Yellow cards (all to Cavalry) but two were called in added time to prevent York break-ins when Cavalry was forced to open up. Hoskins did call a water break each half. I think that's the first time it's happened this season in the CPL. I saw it happen in the L1O game earlier today. This was the 100th CPL game for Cavalry goalie Marco Carducci. He played well but it was Niko Giantsopoulos who earned the shutout for York. The two were teammates two years ago in Calgary. The league website lists Cavalry having 11 shots but 6 were from outside the box and only 2 were on target. Cavalry dominated time of possession by a 2-1 margin. One problem with York is that expected scorers Osaze De Rosario and Brian Wright have still not found the net. If they ever do get going then the other CPL teams will really worry about the quality of York. York pick up their first home win in CPL play this season. I didn't know the victory song was "U Can't Touch This" by MC Hammer. I can't remember if anything was played for their Canadian Championship preliminary round victory against Vancouver FC. York's record improves to 3 wins, 4 losses, 0 ties for 9 points. That's good enough for third place. With so many games ending in ties, York has been able to zip up the standings with a win worth 3 points and three ties earning 3 points. Other teams are taking points off each other. The game after this one, Vancouver vs Valour ended in a scoreless tie which meant two out of the four games this weekend ended in ties. This was the first loss of the season for Cavalry and their record falls to 1 win, 1 loss, and 5 ties for 8 points and fourth place in the standings. Only one loss and behind York! See my comments in the last paragraph about ties costing points! Next game for York is this Wednesday against Forge FC in Hamilton as the only midweek game of the week. Nash admitted at the post game press conference that he must rotate his squad with a game so soon from now.Rocket Robin
