Attendance was not announced but I heard when I got home that it was 1827. This must have been the best crowd since York 9 FC's Canadian Championship game against the Montreal Impact back in 2019 when there was a stand on the east side. More home games against MLS teams is how to improve attendance! Like their preliminary round game against Vancouver FC, this was NOT part of the season ticket holders' package. Middle of the week games are always a struggle for this team but at least the weather tonight was the best we've seen this season. A windbreaker or hoodie was enough even by the time the game ended. I hadn't even heard crowd chants of "We are United" until tonight. There was a lot of excitement in the air which should be a good selling point for a potential buyer of this team. I expect the league wants to have the team stay in the GTA as the 'media capital of Canada' but financially I don't expect they'd restrict any buyer from whisking the team to another province. The scoreline flatters the visitors, not for its dominance in the statistics like shots on goal or on target but that the score was still 0-0 for the first 60 minutes. An own goal then a goalkeeping error put the game out of reach within 12 minutes. York had to open up and the Whitecaps got two more including one on an injury time Penalty kick. York replied with one when Austin Ricci put a blast in at 89 minutes. York's triple substitution at 68 minutes with forwards Ricci, and Brian Wright, and midfielder Clement Bayiha coming on provided some offensive spark. York are knocked out of the competition one round earlier (ie the quarter final stage) than last year when they also were put out by the Whitecaps on the road. Last season their journey included a three round road trip against Atletico Ottawa, Pacific FC then Whitecaps. This year it was two home dates. The semi-final opponent for tonight's winner is a road game against the winner of Pacific FC and L1BC league team TSS Rovers FC which started right after this game finished. I expect both those teams were pulling for Whitecaps so they'd have a big money draw with an opponent from British Colombia. Being knocked out earlier also means York avoids one more game of risking injuries. Friday's league game against Forge FC had Molham Babouli suffer an injury during warmups! We were told it was only a precaution at the time to save him for this game but tonight he wasn't even on the bench and the media notes had him listed with a quad injury (that makes him the third quad injury as Jonathan Grant and Theo Afework also has that listed as the reason for not playing). Even tonight, York's captain Roger Thompson who'd just returned from an injury had to come out at 24 minutes with a limp. York's other problem continues to be that it can't score. They've only done that twice in four league games and their win over Vancouver FC in the preliminary round of this tourney was 1-0 on a controversial Penalty kick call. Osaze De Rosario also hasn't opened his scoring account this season and that's getting to be worrying. This was another home loss which makes four out of five in both competitions. That's another turn off for the fans. They sure aren't wearing out the Vengaboys song played after York goals so far this season. Whitecaps are the defending champions in this competition. Their new head coach Vanni Sartini said after the game that the club is taking this competition seriously. They've only won it twice in the fourteen years since this format was organized. Those years until 2019 only involved three to five teams and the MLS teams were always in the semi-final to start! Many of the Whitecaps Canadian players were from Ontario as was mentioned at the post game press conference. I remember watching Ryan Raposo play for Vaughan Azzurri of League1 Ontario before he was in the MLS Draft. Also was mentioned was Levonte Johnson who was on L1O Masters FA from the 2015 to 2017 season between going to school. York has only played one road game this season and that was to Ottawa for their lone league win. They now travel to Victoria for a Sunday game against Pacific FC and then the next weekend on the opposite coast for a Saturday afternoon game against HFX Wanderers. Finally they come back to York Lions Stadium on Sunday May 28th for a 5:0pm game against Cavalry FC after fans get to see a 1:00pm League1 Ontario game between Woodbridge Strikers and Vaughan Azzurri.Rocket Robin
