Attendance was not announced but was posted online as 882. It was cold and it had rained all morning which would have killed the walk up crowd. There are a few places to hide under canopies and roofs over some of the walkways out of sight of the press box because otherwise I'd say there were a lot less people than that and the one Toronto FC II game played at this ground had more fans in the stands than this one. This looks bad for the team and the league. Is having three home games in a week an oversatuation? Vancouver had a lot of fans behind their bench. Maple Lodge Farms was here with a display and gave out Thundersticks and it was mainly the Vancouver fans who took advantage by clapping them together and singing "VFC" which sounded very much like "TFC" the chant of our downtown MLS team. *Late news from Monday has the team being taken over by the CPL from the last original owners but I'll post some of that info in a cut and paste post soon. It's hard to say if the team was bullied by the league into having game time start so early (ie 1:00pm) because the league broadcaster OneSoccer was pulling off their second triple header Saturday in a row however York had last Sunday to themselves and didn't exactly pack the place. Ouch York goes down by two goals before 20 minutes on two mistakes by their star players. Mo Babouli playing so far back he was in the defence gave up the ball to Shaan Hundal just outside the box and later goalie Niko Giantsopoulos ankle grabbing Gabriel Bitar taking away a sure goal but really only postponing it as Gael Sandoval scored on the resulting Penalty kick. Markyan Voytsekhovskyy who came on at 26 minutes to replace the injured midfielder Clement Bayiha got one back at 34 minutes shooting in a low 12 yarder between a crowd of players after receiving a cross from the left but that was their only goal. York players had numerous unforced errors with balls passed out of bounds or given away. Vancouver earned six Yellow cards to none for York but about half were for non contact plays which they should cut down on or they will run into problems when cards mount up in ten games and every week they miss a player for card accumulation. Hey League1 Ontario team Pro Stars FC had three 2022 players that all started on the bench. York's Voytsekhovskyy came on and scored. Backup emergency goalie Ivan Pavela wasn't used and Vancouver had forward Ameer Kinani come in at 68 minutes and took a few freekicks and cornerkicks. This looks bad for York as this was a battle of the seventh and eighth place teams (York being last on goal differential) after only one game. York opens their regular season with two losses both against teams that are expected to be among the bottom half of the league. Only thing keeping York in the running right now as the other teams are tying each other and reeling in any breakaway leaders. (the other six teams ended up tying each other 1-1 later in the weekend). Now the team takes their show on the road for a game against Atletico Ottawa (who finished first in the regular season last year) and then return home on Friday May 5th against Forge FC (who won the CPL championship last season). A 7:30pm start will keep many travelling fans away because of the distance between the two cities and traffic. TFC II will play here Sunday evening of that weekend so it could be an interesting attendance showdown.Rocket Robin
