Recap | Union II Win Post-Regulation Shootout to Earn Extra Point Against Toronto FC II Sunday, Apr 23, 2023, 05:30 PM Philadelphia Union II faced off against Toronto FC II on Sunday afternoon at Subaru Park, battling to a 3-3 draw. After winning a post regulation shoot-out, Union II picked up two points on the day. In the first half, the two sides traded attacking opportunities early on and in the 13th minute, Union II found their breakthrough when midfielder Jeremy Rafanello slid in the opener to put the side up 1-0. Just after the restart, forward Chris Donovan broke away and found forward Jose Riasco who slotted home his first goal of the season from inside the box to double the lead in the 14th minute. Midfielder David Vazquez nearly found a third goal for Union II in the 28th minute, sending a shot just wide of the target. Forward Jose Riasco then tested the Toronto goalkeeper in the 35th minute, firing a shot on goal and forcing a diving save. Union II continued to press throughout the first half, out shooting Toronto 10 to two. In the second half Toronto responded, finding the back of the net with their first true attacking opportunity of the afternoon when midfielder Antony Curic sent a header into the bottom corner to cut the deficit to one in the 56th minute. Toronto found the equalizer in the 68th minute when forward Hugo Mbongue found the bottom corner, getting the best of the goalkeeper in a one on one situation. In the 74th minute, Union II midfielder Anton Sorenson took down a Toronto attacker in the box to send forward Jesus Batiz to the penalty spot. Goalkeeper Holden Trent got his fingertips on the ball but was not able to stop Batiz’s penalty which put Toronto up 3-2. Shortly after coming on, Union II forward Stefan Stojanovic chipped the keeper from outside the box in the 81st minute after being fed a through-ball by defender Brandan Craig to once again level the score at 3-3 and send the match to kicks from the spot. Union II goalkeeper Holden Trent made a crucial save on Toronto’s final shot from the penalty spot, and midfielder Richard Odada chipped the keeper with his final shot to claim two points with a shootout victory.
