from the splashing of the rain.

45 min...UM Bennett rush on slight left and 18 yard shot is stopped by defender at 12 yards.
47 min...UM Frangini rush on left anda low cross has goalie dive out to smother but he's injured by UM Andreacchi who slides
forward as ball ball gets through them. The trainer is needed for the W goalie.
........UM YELLOW card...Andreacchi earns it for sliding feet first into the prone goalie.
52 min...UM sub...Bovington (an outfield player) switches his jersey to #56 (a spare goalie jersey) and replaces injured Denver Mills.
58 min...UM Andreacchi blasts shot at 20 yards which pinballs around in the box and UM Jaffer almost gets to it.
59 min...UM Saif Jaffer GOAL...UM Andy Lau Moon Lin threads pass from 30 yards finding Jaffer who sends 15 yarder
down middle under diving goalie Sawyer Bovingdon on 3 yard line.

Attendance started at only about 35. The Weather Channel app just listed all 24 hours of Saturday as rain forecast. No one would be able to say the channel ruined their picnic. The game that ended just an hour before between L1O Scrosoppi and Simcoe County Rovers had been fine with just the sky overcast their entire time here.

Scrosoppi took over first place with the win. Now was going to start a battle between the two worst teams in the league.

The hard rain immediately cut the attendance in half and all the ones who stayed had umbrellas. When I thought it couldn't rain any harder at 65 minutes the sky must have switched the dial in the clouds to '11' has it started that much harder. I was saved by being up in the wooden treehouse that doubles as a broadcast booth. The railings were sending up quite a splash. The guy camming this game for broadcast and the YouTube channel had sheets of clear plastic laid over his keyboard so he must have been in this situation before. Pierce Lang provided the play by play.

Just three weeks ago I had seen Waterloo for the first time get manhandled by Vaughan Azzurri 8-0 and interviewed head coach John O'Brien. He's now been replaced by Adolfo Plaza. I don't know if it was his honesty of saying that game was 'men playing young boys' or his saying that Waterloo was getting nothing he'd seen from the German team Borussia Dortmund in the deal they'd signed with the club.

I'm no fan of the L1O website as their software is limited but one thing I like is they put a '1' sign in front of a player's name if he hasn't seen action before. That way I learned that Waterloo started 'rookies' Matthew Campbell, Ali Shabaan, and Joseph Roman and brought in Djoey Elkhass as a sub tonight.

Something else was the scorer's table was advised that there may be a late scratch as the backup goalie Isaiah Cook had phoned the team to say he was having car trouble and may be late or not make it. Waterloo is 112 km away. That doesn't usually mean that much except tonight! So at 47 minutes UM Marco Frangini rushes up the left wing and sends a low cross along the 7 yard line. Goalie Denver Mills dives forward to smother it but UM Frank Andreacchi slides forward feet first to poke it into the net and the players collide. Mills clutches his face and there is a five minute delay as the trainer is called out for the goalie. We are told Mills has lost at least one tooth as he's helped from the field with gauze in his mouth. No back up goalie! Outfield player Sawyer Bovingdon who was on the bench pulls on a contrasting jersey and grabs some goalie gloves and comes out to play the last half between the pipes. One sweet moment was team captain Matthew Mills patting Denver Mills on the shoulder as he was helped from the field. I don't know if that was because Matthew is the captain of the team or they are brothers. Something I'd meant to ask earlier but forgot as I was so anxious to run out to the parking lot as soon as the game was over without getting too wet. The rain switch dialed back down to maybe '5' by game's end.

This was not the kind of night that any player could show off their skills. The field was well drained so I didn't see the ball stopping dead a puddle like some of those CONCACAF fields or even some of the older field turf fields that are still around in the GTA. I don't remember any other sliding tackles tonight.

Referee Phil Benevides gave out only two Yellow cards tonight (one to each team). The UM one was to Andreacchi for injurying the goalie on that play.

Matthew Mattila earned the shutout for Unionville Milliken. It was his first clean sheet of the season in this his fourteenth game. UM had allowed 43 goals up until tonight. All goalies used tonight had to adapt to the weather with punch outs and swat-downs and smothering rather than trying to catch a slippery ball in the rain.

Unionville Milliken was bounced to this stadium at the beginning of the season on one week's notice because the City of Markham decided that renting the school field at Bill Carruthers SS did not entitle the renters access to the school building ie locker rooms and change rooms. One weeks notice ensures they get the lousy starting times ie. 9:00pm! Late starts and the 33 km distance between towns means there's never any ball kids here and attendances less than 100 even on good nights.

The OSC rented out their stadium time Prime Time Saturday nights to Scrosoppi FC who the season before played at Bishop Reding CSS in Milton but this season booked OSC months in advance because that school is undergoing renovations.

This was actually the second game UM has won this season on the field. They beat Windsor City 2-0 the first week of the season but that game was turned into a 3-0 loss because UM was ruled to have used an ineligible player. We'll have to see if this one stays in the books for more than a week.

The win improves Unionville Milliken's record to 1 win, 13 losses, 1 tie for 4 points. They move up to twentieth place in the league. Their three goals tonight move them even with Waterloo as having scored 11 goals in 15 games. That's not even the lowest in the league—that's held by Masters FA.

Waterloo's loss leaves them at 1 win, 14 losses, 0 ties for 3 points. League worst 70 goals against. They are now the last place team. Both of tonight's teams are doomed to the second tier 'Championship League Division' next season.
