THE BATTLE FOR THE PLAYOFFS REMAINS TIGHT IN BOTH DIVISIONS AS TEAMS AT THE TOP
CONTINUE TO WIN.
Scrosoppi stayed strong against Guelph United to stay top in the standings
NDC Ontario respond
NDC Ontario bounced back from their dropped points last weekend by beating Burlington 3-0 in the
Women’s Premier Division on Friday night. Anaya Johnson and Rosa Maalouf put the champions in control
in the first half before Kayla Briggs rounded off a strong performance in the closing stages. NDC sit
four points behind Vaughan Azzurri but still have three games in hand.
Darby beat BVB IA Waterloo 2-1 to strengthen their grip on a top-division spot on the Road to 2024
and the points were shared between St Catharines Roma Wolves and North Mississauga. The dropped
points for the Panthers sees them slip out of the playoff places.
Blue Devils kept up their winning ways in the Men’s Premier Division; a James Lima goal was enough
to give them the three points against North Mississauga. Burlington moved above Sigma in the standings
after they beat their rivals 3-0.
A big win for Scrosoppi
Tomasz Skublak was the hero for Scrosoppi on Canada Day as his first-half strike earned a narrow victory
against third-placed Guelph United in the Men’s Premier Division. The sides came into the game level
on points and in similar form, but the visitors couldn’t find a response to going behind.
The result means Scrosoppi maintain their place at the top of the table, tied on points with Blue Devils
but ahead due to their additional victory.
No room for dropped points
A dominant Vaughan Azzurri put on an impressive performance on Sunday afternoon, beating Tecumseh 5-0.
The victory sees them preserve their four-point lead at the top of the Women’s Premier Division
and is the fourth time this season they’ve scored five goals or more against their opponents.
Electric City got the better of Alliance United for the second season in a row, beating them 1-0 to move
into the top six. Aysia King’s strike was the difference as the side in third place going into the
gameweek lost for the second time in four days.
Woodbridge Strikers secured their biggest win of the season in their match against Guelph Union.
The hosts scored seven goals without reply thanks to four first-half goals from Jayda Thompson
and Jessica Lisi’s hat-trick; both were unstoppable on the day. The results leaves fifth-placed
Woodbridge with a seven-point buffer to the teams below them.
Hamilton United and FC London both scored four goals en route to victory. Hamilton won 4-1 away
at ProStars while FC London got the better of Unionville Milliken in a game that finished 4-2.
There was also a 0-0 stalemate between Blue Devils and Simcoe Country Rovers, leaving both sides sitting
two points adrift of the top six.
Hamilton United had a Sunday to remember as they put eight goals past BVB IA Waterloo in the Men’s Premier
Division. Antony Caceres and Jamu Iluya both scored a brace in a manic first half that ended 6-1 before
the hosts added two more after the break. While the margin of victory is impressive, it’s the three
points that are most valuable to Hamilton as they hunt down a top-division spot on the Road to 2024.
Vaughan Azzurri were 3-1 winners against Windsor City. All three goals for the champions came in the
first half, and Windsor conceded three for the third game running.
Elsewhere, Alliance United put in a five-star performance as they beat mid-table ProStars 5-0. Nikola Stakic
led the way with two goals to help keep Alliance in the playoff conversation.
Apart from Sigma, all the teams fighting to finish in the top six also won this week. North Toronto Nitros
recovered from their loss to Burlington last time out to beat Master’s FA 3-1, and Simcoe County Rovers
took advantage of playing on home turf once again as they were 2-0 victors against St Catharines
Roma Wolves, with Jevontae Layne netting an eye-catching bicycle kick to ensure the hosts got their
third win in a row.
Making sure to keep pace with those above them were Electric City; they had four different scorers
on their visit to Woodbridge Strikers and won 4-1. It was a first defeat for Woodbridge since May.
FC London and Darby were evenly matched and their game ended in a 1-1 tie, as was the case in 2022.
NDC Ontario visit North Mississauga in the Women’s Premier Division on Tuesday evening to round off
the gameweek.
