Weekly Rewind By League1 Ontario staff, 05/23/23, 10:15AM EDT SIDES AT THE TOP OF BOTH DIVISIONS CONTINUE TO WIN AS EARLY PLAYOFF CONTENDERS EMERGE. Tecumseh shone on the road Simcoe County Rovers bounce back After collecting one point in their last three games, Simcoe County Rovers bounced back on Friday night with a dominant 5-0 win against ProStars. Orlendis Benitez-Hernandez was in form once again and one of five players who got on the scoresheet, with the three points keeping the team within touching distance on a playoff spot. In the Women’s Premier Division we had two fixtures on Friday, starting with North Toronto Nitros against St Catharines Roma Wolves. The Nitros were 2-1 winners with Isabella Mazzaferro’s second-half strike enough to give her side the points, while Ava Greco helped NDC Ontario continue their perfect start to the campaign with a 1-0 win over BVB IA Waterloo. Late drama on Saturday Saturday was all about the Men’s Premier Division with two games taking place. FC London and Hamilton United couldn’t be separated as they played out a 1-1 tie; the former thought they had got their first win of the season until substitute Jacob Geyer equalised in the 86th minute to spoil the party. It was a positive end to the week for Hamilton, who suffered defeat to North Toronto Nitros last Wednesday. North Mississauga got their second win of the season on their trip to Unionville Milliken. The Panthers conceded first but came back with two goals before half-time to seal the three points, leaving their hosts at the bottom of the table. Hamilton United left it late to snatch a point Nine games, nine winners There were nine L1O matches on Sunday with each one having a definitive winner. In the Women’s Premier Division, Alliance United visited Simcoe County Rovers – two sides who both have playoff expectations in 2023. When the teams met last season Simcoe County Rovers came away with a 2-0 win, but this time around it was Alliance United who got the better of their rivals by the same score. Elsewhere, Blue Devils edged a tight game against Woodbridge Strikers to move ahead of them in the table. Abigaile Russell’s goal in the 71st minute was enough to give the Oakville side victory, bouncing back from their midweek defeat to Vaughan Azzurri. There were 3-0 wins in our other women’s games as Hamilton United beat Burlington and Tecumseh beat ProStars. Tecumseh were powered to victory by a brace from Kailyn Robertson, their first win since the opening day of the season. We had five Men’s Premier Division matches on Sunday and it was Blue Devils who registered an eye-catching performance as they put five past Darby. Defender Adam Czerkawski was deployed as a striker in this encounter and showed a killer instinct in front of goal, scoring a hat-trick that took him to five goals for the season. Above Blue Devils in the table sit Burlington, who also got three points on Sunday as they beat Master’s FA 2-1. Division leaders Sigma were also in action; they scored four against Windsor City to remain a point ahead of their nearest challengers. BVB IA Waterloo and Woodbridge Strikers played out a five-goal thriller at Vaughan Grove Turf. Woodbridge Strikers scored two goals before half time but after the break BVB IA Waterloo brought it back to 2-2. Ryley Wishart then scored a third for Woodbridge Strikers to give his side maximum points. Our final game of the weekend saw Scrosoppi beat Alliance United to leapfrog their opponents in the table. Scrosoppi have 12 points from their opening five fixtures, a tally that took them 11 matches to reach in 2022. Guelph doubleheader There’s still soccer to be played this gameweek with both Guelph teams in action. United host North Toronto Nitros at the Centennial Bowl in the Men’s Premier Division, followed by Union welcoming Unionville Milliken.back to 2023 League1 Ontario menu
