Attendance may have peaked at 100 after halftime when it stopped raining. The rain started just as 'O Canada' was being played. It started to get harder until its worst at halftime then stopped for the entire second half and started again after the game and rained hard all night. Rovers exploded with their second biggest win of the season (they beat Masters FA at home 6-0). Their roster looked like an all star team but it was with players I don't remember being with them last season. It turns out that is the case with only captain Justin Earle and forward Shawn-Claud Lawson from the then newly formed 2022 Rovers team. Rovers put this game away in late in the first half with them starting to dominate from about the 20 minute mark. Baj Maan earned the shutout for Rovers. I remember him as the backup goalie for Sigma FC in a pre-CPL season never getting into the action because Triston Henry played every game. Tonight he had a key save at 1 minute palming a cornerkick through the box in a crowd of players and at 29 minutes when he had to bat a 12 yard blast from Jordan Webb away from the short post on the right. I'll give credit to Rovers defenders of Andre Beecher, Tajay Reid, Cameron Dasilva and Ijah Halley (when he wasn't bombing down the wing) with preventing most ProStars shots or keeping them at long distances. Rovers Halley had a spell in the second half where he eluded two defenders at 48 minutes on a run up the right and his low cross had Raheem Thorpe shoot a 6 yard sitter wide then Halley's run up the wing two minutes later had him draw the Penalty kick. 'Those Cuban guys' Alejandro Portal and Orlendis Benitez Hernandez (and for OBH a brief call up with CPL Forge FC) have come over from last year's champions Vaughan Azzurri and fit in well. Benitez scored at 76 minutes on a great give and go then drew a Yellow for what looked like taunting as he was celebrating for being pushed over many times in the game and infuriating ProStars players for trying to draw a Penalty kick. ProStars Sebastian Lopez put some freekicks and cornerkicks into good spots that could have kept his team in the game early if his teammates had been able to capitalize. Referee John O'Hara gave out seven Yellow cards (five to Rovers) all in the second half with more than half for dissent, taunting, and even time wasting—why would a goalie with a 3-0 lead be slow picking out a ball behind the net to take a goal kick? These teams finished last season fifth and sixth with Rovers one point ahead and qualified for post season. Because of the best seven teams opening up a huge gap over the also rans, even with more weight given to 2023 points, I'd have both teams easily qualifying to survive the Top 12 Division split at the end of this season. Both teams have become a magnet for stars from other L1O teams. Last season's reverse fixture had ProStars travel to Barrie for a 1-0 win on June 4th The win improves the Rovers record to 3 wins, 2 losses, 1 tie for 10 points into fifth place. Their goals for/against goes to 19/7 for +9. I had been worried about their slow start after seeing a linescore last week when they had 'only' tied previously pointless FC London but their head coach Jason Beckford assured me that it was his team settling in as only two players returned from last year's team. ProStars FC's record drops to 3 wins, 2 losses, 0 ties for 9 points and keeps them to ninth place. Their other loss was to Sigma FC who have beaten Rovers earlier and take a 2-0-0 lead in the fan sponsored Credit River Cup with all three teams still having to play North Mississauga SC. Sigma can wrap it up in three weeks as they are the first team to play N Miss and must be considered strong favourites. There are still seven games this weekend so with fourteen teams, I can see both of tonight's teams being leapfrogged in the standings.RocketRobin01
