LEAGUE1 ONTARIO IS BACK WITH PLENTY OF GOALS IN 2023’S OPENING ROUND OF FIXTURES.
Sigma players celebrate
Sigma scored five goals in an eight-goal thriller.

Spoils shared in season opener

Reigning Men’s Premier Division champions Vaughan Azzurri hosted North Toronto Nitros as the sides kicked off the new season. Both teams made it into the playoffs last year and couldn’t be separated last Wednesday, Justin Santos scoring two goals for the Nitros while Omar Marzouk found the back of the net twice for the champions.

The Azzurri now have full focus on their Canadian Championship fixture against CF Montreal at Stade Saputo tonight. Click here to hear from Vaughan assistant coach Carmine Isacco ahead of the game.

Soccer weekends are back

With the L1O season under way, the weekend of soccer action was kicked off with Burlington facing North Mississauga on Friday night, and the Bayhawks registered a 3-0 victory with three different scorers.

Fans were treated to plenty of goals on Saturday with 15 scored across four L1O matches. Hamilton United and Sigma played out an eight-goal thriller with Kevaughn Tavernier’s hat-trick helping Sigma get early points on the board, the game finishing 5-3 to the visitors.

Elsewhere, Alliance United beat St. Catharines Roma Wolves 3-0 at the Birchmount Stadium with talisman Nikola Stakic again among the scorers. Darby also won by three goals as they hosted Woodbridge Strikers – Kashiff Collins starring with a brace.

Scrosoppi and Electric City were only separated by two points at the end of last season and this match-up was a similarly tight affair; new Scrosoppi signing Alexander Zis scored the game’s only goal in the 55th minute.

A strong start for playoff hopefuls

Simcoe Country Rovers beat BVB IA Waterloo away from home in a 3-1 win on Sunday, continuing their positive run at the end of their inaugural campaign to make it seven regular-season games in a row without defeat.

ProStars got their season off to a strong start with a win at the Ontario Soccer Stadium. Jordan Webb and Sebastian Lopez scored one goal each as they beat Master’s FA.

Last year’s finalists Blue Devils could only salvage a draw in their first game after Guelph United took a 2-0 lead in the first half. Gianluca Spadafora and Adam Czerkawski rescued a point for the hosts late on.

There was also late drama in Unionville Milliken’s home game against Windsor City as the final two minutes saw Ethan Hunter and Yuaan Cheliyan snatch three points for the hosts.

Four days of matches

Week Two sees L1O Men’s Premier Division matches take place from Thursday to Sunday, starting with Darby looking to make it two wins from two as they take on Hamilton United.

It’s also a huge week for the Women’s Premier Division as the league kicks off once again on Friday. Stay tuned tomorrow for our preview to the new season.
