YORK UNITED FC SELECTS CHRIS CAMPOLI AND TRIVINE ESPRIT IN 2023 CPL - U SPORTS DRAFT Both players have impressed with Ontario Tech and have amassed League1 Ontario experience too. York United FC is thrilled to announce Chris Campoli and Trivine Esprit as their picks for the 2023 CPL - U SPORTS Draft. With the fourth selection in Round 1, the club selected 21-year-old attacker Campoli, who enjoyed a spectacular year with Ontario Tech University. Having scored 13 goals and added six assists in 11 games (which meant he contributed to 75% of the Ridgeback's overall goal tally), his superb performances saw him crowned U SPORTS Player of the Year. In doing so, he made history on two counts: no Ridgeback had ever been awarded the Joe Johnson Memorial Trophy before and no Ontario Tech athlete had ever been named a national Player of the Year. He was also recognized as the Ontario University Athletics East MVP and named to the All-Star First Team for the second time. He was previously drafted by The Nine Stripes in January 2021 and by HFX Wanderers in January 2022. A native of Woodbridge, ON, Campoli has also enjoyed some League1 Ontario experience this year. He played seven times and scored twice for North Mississauga across April and May. He also appeared for Prostars FC later in the season, making a further five appearances and grabbing three more goals. "I just felt that after the year he had, Chris really deserved the opportunity to push and try to make our roster," says Angus McNab, York United FC's CEO/President and GM. "In 2021, circumstances were really against him because the Covid restrictions he faced made it very difficult to get proper time with the group and crack the roster. He is the reigning U SPORTS Player of the Year so let's see what he can do in a different environment now." With the second selection in Round 2, York United FC selected 20-year-old midfielder Trivine Esprit, also from Ontario Tech. A native of Scarborough, ON, he was a standout for the Ridgebacks and made a litany of appearances, scoring once and adding one assist. His performances led to him being named Ontario Tech Athlete of the Week in September. Esprit also boasts plenty of League1 Ontario experience. In 2021, he made nine starts for Unionville Milliken SC, racking up close to 800 minutes of action. He followed that up in 2022 by developing into a key part of the Simcoe County Rovers FC setup, making 16 appearances overall. “Trivine is a really interesting player," says McNab. "He and his brother are very close to Jordan [Wilson], who has been pestering me to take a real look at him for a while. This season with Ontario Tech, he developed a real bank of footage for us to properly evaluate. He’s got some real grit and bite to his game, but there's also plenty of technical ability there too so we're excited to see how he does with us." Campoli and Esprit may now be invited to York’s pre-season training in early-2023, where they can compete for a roster spot for the upcoming campaign. © 2022 YORK UNITED FC
