DOMINICK ZATOR SHORTLISTED FOR CPL'S INAUGURAL DEFENDER OF THE YEAR AWARD The 28-year-old was an ever-present for The Nine Stripes this season. York United FC's Dominick Zator has been nominated for the Canadian Premier League's inaugural Defender of the Year award. The 28-year-old enjoyed a superb season and was an ever-present for The Nine Stripes, narrowly missing out on playing every single second of his side's 28 regular season fixtures. Only a late calf cramp suffered in the 3-1 away win at Pacific FC in early September forced him off for the final 14 minutes and spoiled an other-wise impeccable appearance record. He started every league game and managed 2,506 minutes of action, the second-highest tally in the CPL. Deputizing as captain on numerous occasions, Zator displayed immense leadership qualities when an injury crisis derailed York's season and he remained a standout performer even when results didn't go their way. In 2022, he led the team in blocks, clearances and passes and also gamely pivoted later in the campaign when Head Coach Martin Nash needed an emergency left-back. Zator finished the season with one goal and one assist, both standout moments in their own right. With his side trailing 2-1 to Atletico Ottawa at York Lions Stadium in the fourth game of the campaign back in April, he controlled an in-swinging free-kick, turned and drilled a shot inside the near post for a last-gasp equalizer. Later in the season, during his stint at left-back, he sent in an inch-perfect cross for Mo Babouli to finish to the net and level affairs away to Pacific FC. Forge FC’s Alexander Achinioti-Jönsson and Pacific FC’s Amer Didic are also nominated for the award, with the winner revealed at an in-person ceremony during the league’s 2022 Finals Weekend. © 2022 YORK UNITED FC
