Final Score:...York United FC........3........Valour FX FC.........1........
Attendance wasn't announced although the crowd looked legit over 1000 which the team usually puts as a minimum. This looked like one of their largest crowds of the year. I eventually read that last week's home game against HFX Wanderers had 1525 which I think was York's largest crowd. Tonight was comparable to that. The 900 Section (south end zone) was down to the York United team swag tent, Steam Whistle brewery and Sharman's Proper Pies as the season winds down. Referee Yusri Rudolph gave out just two Yellow cards tonight, both to Valour players but called that Penalty kick which months ago with the goal being scored, would have spelled all hope of York earning points instead got York to patiently get back into the game. This is the first time York has beaten or even earned a point against Valour FC in four games this season. May 15th they lost 1-0 in Winnipeg, June 26th they lost here 3-1, and August 7th lost 2-0 back out in Winnipeg. I remember the June 26th York vs Valour game as York's low point of the season. They did break out of a six game scoring slump but their bench only had one actual York player and the rest were emergency contract players and some hadn't even practiced with the team. Their substitute goalie was playing U-15. I was missing a Canadian Women's National team game down at BMO Field for this. (a 0-0 tie against Korean Republic). Earlier today the Canadian Men's World Cup bound team beat Qatar 2-0 over in Vienna. A tweet circulated that in 2015, Canada beat Qatar 2-0 in U-15 play with Alphonso Davies and Jonathan David on the Canadian side but extra interest for us tonight is that the goalie in Canada's net was Gianluca Catalano who was York's back-up goalie tonight! York had to make some changes as leading scorer Osaze De Rosario was back after serving a suspension for Yellow card accumulation (was he ever missed in last week's scoreless draw against HFX!). Tonight midfielder Noah Verhoeven was serving a suspension for Yellow card accumulation. Roger Thompson was missing because of last game's quad injury. It was nice to see Michael Petrasso back as a starter after months of injury and gradually working his way off the bench to put in 68 minutes. Luis Lawrie-Lattanzio had been falling back not even in the lineup or being an unused bench player but tonight he came off the bench to replace Petrasso and scored the insurance goal at 75 minutes so fans and players could breath a sigh of relieve. York won to keep their slim playoff chances alive. After winning only twice in their first 15 games, they have now won 7 in their last 11 games. In home games though, tonight was only their fifth win for the fans. They pull to within four points of both Valour and Pacific FC who have two games in hand. Nice that they don't let Valour get any further ahead but Pacific can still eliminate both York and HFX Wanderers tomorrow night (although that game has been postponed to Sunday because of Hurricane Fiona) with Pacific scheduled to play in Halifax. Interesting that the players marched out to the field while the CCR tune 'Fortunate Son' was playing. Coincidence or was it deliberately played? This game really hurt Valour's playoff chances. They had clawed their way up to top four playoff contention but tonight started a three game road trip to finish their season. Well no worry about York struggling for fans their last two games as both of them are on the road against current final four teams Forge FC and Atletico Ottawa. The next time I see some of the York players again will be next Sunday, October 2nd when three of them are scheduled to be at The Allstate Soccer Show in Mississauga. Isaiah Johnston, Jordan Wilson, and Niko Giantsopoulos are scheduled. Forge will have three players too. They keep adding guests and I think Toronto FC are up to five players.
