Attendance wasn't announced but after starting off slow at the 7:30pm gametime, it grew to about the 1000+ they usually get at their summer games. After a long road trip which I thought would break up the crowd momentum, York are hosting three successive Friday night games in a row to finish out their home schedule. They finish the regular season with two road games. Before 'O Canada', there was a moment of silence for the passing of Queen Elizabeth which I understood. Even the Americans held a moment of silence for her last night before their NFL season opener. I was given a team fact sheet beside the usual starting lineups. It listed the goal scorers for York. I knew Osaze De Rosario was the leading scorer on the team with ten goals but didn't realize the next leading scorers Mo Babouli, Ronan Kratt, Jordan Wilson, and Sebastian Gutierrez were all on two goals! Well Babouli steps into second all alone with four goals after tonight. De Rosario also leads the Under-21 minutes for the team with 1739 up to tonight. The league mandate is 2000 for the entire team! York U-21 minutes in total up to tonight were 5671 minutes. Eleias Himaras was the starting goalie for York tonight as Niko Giantopoulos is still injured. Backup goalie tonight was Gianluca Catalano. Just last Saturday afternoon, Catalano helped Vaughan Azzurri won the League1 Ontario Men's Premier Division Final 5-1 against Blue Devils FC. He has been on the York roster as a back up earlier in the season. He seems to have replaced Spiridon Koskinas of L1O team Masters FA as the back up. Himaras played for Electric City FC earlier this season so York has proven that they have a respect for L1O calibre goalie's at least. Sitting of the bench was Catalano who had to miss the Vaughan Soccer Club banquet where his teammates waved the Championship trophy around. (I received the tweet pictures). Himaras played just fine tonight. Defender Tass Mourdoukoutas stepped in front of a chipped cross to head for a corner "Just to be certain" he said after the game when it looked like Himaras was going to make the catch. Every team seems to protect a new, young goalie. FCE head coach Alan Koch said his team was sluggish in the first half and he made three subs at halftime. On the Edmonton subs bench tonight were two players traded from York earlier this season. Mouhamadou Kane came in at 80 minutes and Felix N'Sa (the brother of Chrisnovic N'Sa) did not see action. Referee Myriam Marcotte gave out four Yellow cards tonight (two to each team) besides awarding York the Penalty kick when Molham Babouli was pushed over cutting in near the right end line. She led an all female officiating team. York's last home game against Edmonton, York won in a come from behind game but tonight they were never behind from the opening goal and looked very comfortable killing off the last twenty plus minutes of the game with a two goal lead. York's record improves to 8 wins, 5 ties, 11 losses to 29 points. They stay in sixth place and move up to only seven points out of the playoffs (fourth place) however this is the first game of the weekend so all the teams above them can pull away again. Not much York can do except keep winning and hope the other teams tie or two go into slumps until the season ends. Four wins in their last five games is a good record but even continuing that may be too late to make the playoffs. Edmonton was on a four game unbeaten streak since they last played York here on August 14th. Head coach Alan Koch answered my question at the post game press conference with the observation that both teams have played well after playing each other. They tied the second game of the season, Edmonton won 3-0 hosting their game on Canada Day, their unbeaten streak started after their York game, and now they are looking for big things as they finish their schedule with all home games. Tonight's result leaves their record at 3 wins, 7 ties, 14 losses for 14 points. That includes no road wins this season.
