Attendance wasn't announced and the league site finally updated as 1345 two days later. I'd say it was better than their last home game back on Sunday July 24th. The game time today was moved back from 2:00pm to 4:00pm and announced weeks ago. I didn't get a reason for that. It sounded smart to avoid the midday heat waves we were having most of the summer until this week. Also there was a huge crowd of people and cars crowding the lots for the Canadian Open Women's tennis this week. I parked in my usual lot (the 'free on weekends' transit lot north of Steeles) but for today about 400 metres from the usual empty patch I can usually find on a normal weekend. During the second half of the game I saw a steady exit of fans from the tennis walk by at the north exit but didn't notice anyone stop to look through the fencing at what was going on with us. It was good to see there were three food trucks in the south endzone. That number had dwindled to one the last few games. There was a large representation of youth players here. The ones I noticed were from the Aurora Soccer Club because of their distinct yellow and black uniforms. A York United official said after the game that it was the largest autograph session he'd seen the club hold. Referee Yusri Rudolf gave out five Yellow cards (three to York and two of those for dissent) including a Yellow to Edmonton goalie coach on the player bench. There are bad Yellow cards that have hurt York this season. Osaze De Rosario earned one of those early in the second half for kicking the ball away after being called offside at the Edmonton 30 yard line. A possible 'good' Yellow timewasting call was deep into injury time where Sebastian Gutierrez deliberately delayed an Edmonton freekick to let more defenders back in the play. Most upset with the officiating was Edmonton head coach Alan Koch after the game when he went off topic answering a question criticizing Rudolf for ordering Wesley Lanca-Timoteo off after being down injured. Wesley had waved off any trainer coming on to the field so he could stay in play despite taking a cross in the balls. He was forced to watch the resulting cornerkick from behind the end line which turned into the Jordan Wilson winning goal. One more player in the box may have prevented it. Koch pointed out that a York player was allowed to stay in the game a few minutes later after an injury. York were forced to use their back up goalie Eleias Himaras in net today as regular Niko Giantsopoulos who was injured in last week's game at the 20 minute mark in Winnipeg is out for a still unknown amount of time. Himaras looked competent in goal and couldn't be blamed for either goal. He looked more conservative going down to smother a ball rather than look to launch the ball upfield quickly which was fine. Defenders were available to clear rebounds. He played the first part of the year for Electric City of League1 Ontario but has been the York backup for more than a month. Back up goalie for York was Svyatoslav Artemenko who as recently as Friday night played in net for League1 Ontario side Guelph United. He has played against CPL opposition earlier this season when Guelph hosted HFX Wanderers in the preliminary round of the Canadian Championships. York took the lead early but as the game dragged on it looked like they might settle for a 1-0 win. Edmonton equalized at 61 minutes and then took the lead at 77 minutes and things looked bleek even with all the new players added in the last month until early this week. Goals at 79 and 83 minutes tied then regained the lead for York and some tense moments in injury time but they held on. It was the first start for goalie Himaras but also for defender/midfielder Paris Gee. Forward Molham Babouli was signed earlier in the week and has had three practices with the team and fit right in despite not playing for a few months since returning from playing in the second division in Qatar. This was the first goal from Lisandro Cabrera with York. It was unexpected with all the minutes he's played this season with no result, he'd come in one minute before scoring. Appropriate though that tonight's game had a Latino theme and a hero was from Argentina. On the winning goal did the goalie lose the ball staring into the sun and turn a catch into a palm attempt over the box but it didn't come off coming right for Jordan Wilson to pop a header over him and drop into the open net? York are in a pattern for their last six games of lose, win, lose, win, lose, and now win. It's an improvement from their early season form. Since there last win at home way back on May 6th against Forge FC their home record has been lose, tie, lose, lose, lose, and lose until today. Lucky they still have fans no matter how disappointing their home record is. FC Edmonton are in even worse shape. Because of ownership problems the league is running the team with the other teams picking up the contracts and 'loaning' the players back to Edmonton. Tobias Warschewski was with Edmonton last season but he's now contracted to York and lent back to the team. There's always that uncertainty that he could be called back. Azriel Gonzalez is in the same situation. They teamed up at 77 minutes to give Edmonton the lead and I thought that would be the headline until the late York heroics. Earlier in the week, York midfielder Mouhamadou Kane was loaned to the team to get playing time but he didn't get into the game until 86 minutes. The win improves York's record to 5 wins, 10 losses, 5 ties for 20 points. That's good for seventh place, just one point behind HFX Wanderers who won their game yesterday afternoon. The problem is the fourth and final playoff spot is held by Atletico Ottawa who have 32 points. The top four teams change positions every week with the next four dueling amongst themselves with maybe only Valour FC able to break into the top four. FC Edmonton's record falls to 2 wins, 13 losses, 5 ties for 11 points. They prop up the table in eighth place. Next season a ninth team from the Vancouver BC area enters the league and starting from scratch we'll see how they fit in. Home momentum for York? They now have three games on the road and don't return to York Lions Stadium until Friday September 9th at 7:30pm against....err FC Edmonton! A Friday night game with all the kids back in school Peeking ahead, the remaining three home games will be on Friday nights but their season should be over before the weather gets really cold.
