YORK UNITED FC CONFIRMS DEPARTURE OF LOWELL WRIGHT TO WHITECAPS FC 2 The 18-year-old has blossomed into a standout player since signing for The Nine Stripes in 2020. York United FC can confirm the departure of forward Lowell Wright to MLS NEXT Pro side Whitecaps FC 2. In his three seasons with The Nine Stripes, the 18-year-old made 44 appearances in all competitions, scored seven goals and conjured five assists. In total, he accumulated 2,285 minutes of professional action since making a memorable debut for the club back in 2020. Joining as a 16-year-old just two weeks prior to the Island Games tournament, Wright made history as the Canadian Premier League's youngest ever goalscorer when he came off the bench in his side's opening clash with Atletico Ottawa and turned in Max Ferrari's low cross to the bottom corner just seven minutes after being introduced. If his first season with York was a success, Wright's sophomore campaign was superb. He struck six times and finished as the team's joint-top scorer, delivering a number of standout individual displays. There was a brace in a 2-1 home win against Valour FC and a seismic performance on the road at Starlight Stadium as the playoff race intensified. Trailing eventual champions Pacific FC by a goal, Wright entered the game on 55 minutes and completely changed the game. Almost immediately, he created the equalizer with an excellent dribble and dangerous delivery to the near post where Julian Ulbricht flicked home. Then, inside the last 10 minutes, Wright - with his back to goal - picked the ball up inside the area, turned instinctively and smashed a magnificent winner to the top corner. Given his rapid development, it was little surprise when he was selected for the Canada Under-20 training camp in April of this year ahead of the CONCACAF Championship. Subsequently, he was named in the final squad for the June tournament and - once again - delivered when it mattered most. Wright appeared in all four games for his country in Honduras and scored twice, most notably in a crucial 2-2 group-stage draw with the United States, and again in the 4-0 demolition of St Kitts and Nevis. "This is a great move for all parties," says Angus McNab, York United FC's CEO/President and GM. "Lowell has shown over the past three seasons in the CPL that he is a dynamic and exciting young talent who is capable of producing moments of brilliance." "This is something we’ve been discussing with Axel [Schuster] and the Whitecaps since we had dinner with him the evening before our Canadian Championship semi-final in Vancouver back in June. I’m delighted Lowell is getting this opportunity with them as I really think some of their recent recruitment has been exciting and it’s going to be an environment in which Lowell will really be challenged." © 2022 YORK UNITED FC
