Attendance was not announced but looked about as good as their last game here against Valour FC on June 26th. That game was on a Sunday afternoon though. I expect it will be just be conveniently over 1000 (good for marketing). The crowd size was suplemented by a large group of Forge travelling fans who would have come from the Hamilton area. Wow to fight GTA traffic to get here by 7:30pm. I've heard it's hard for York fans to get here from downtown Toronto by this time. Forge fans had a much happier time than the goal starved York fans. We haven't got to hear the Vengaboys song played after a York goal that I've forgotten if it's even 'Boom Boom Boom' or 'We Like To Party'. York have been able to add and use some new players since the transfer window opened. Australian defender Tass Mourdoukoutas debuted as a starter with countryman Luis Lawrie-Lattanzio who staying on the bench as he'd only arrived yesterday. Ronan Kratt, a Canadian forward played upfront and shows promise. All the emergency signings on short term contracts have been returned to their clubs except a new signing for this game, Eleias Himaras who was tonight's back up goalie. He has come over from Electric City FC of League1 Ontario. Not just new signings but just having regulars return has helped York. Roger Thompson returns from injury as a valuable defender and midfielder Cedric Toussaint is back after serving a three game suspension. Both came into the game in the second half. Michael Petrasso also has returned from a long injury but stayed on the bench tonight. The extra players let Martin Nash rest forward Osaze De Rosario who he said after the game had been overused and needed the rest. Some promising play but York players were getting into good positions but then firing off target. Just get those shots on target--it might be a goal or it could set up a rebound but these shots out of play immediately stop the action and you lose possession. At the other end, Nikolas Giantsopoulos was back in net after missing the last game with a leg injury. Two goals against is a slight improvement from their last two games against Valour FC and FC Edmonton when three goals went against them. Forge made a triple sub at 74 minutes and scored their second goal two minutes later. One of those subs was Orlendis Benitez (I've usually listed him with four names in L1O play). He was playing less than a month ago for League1 Ontario side Vaughan Azzurri and his debut after playing the afternoon before for Vaughan against Forge's L1O 'affililate' Sigma FC was to get in a few minutes for Forge against Pacific FC the next day. Tonight was his earliest subbing in so far in his CPL career. After the game head coach Bobby Smyrniotis filled me in with more details. Benitez had been at the Forge preseason camp but wasn't offered a contract then because CPL rosters are so small. In that Vaughan vs Sigma game defender Daniel Stampatori was being watched playing for Sigma and he was brought up. He stayed on the bench tonight. And yes that triple substitution reminded me of the four player substitution in the Canada Women's Concacaf qualifier just a few days earlier with Canada breaking open their game against Trinidad & Tobago with five goals scored in the final minutes to put the game out of reach and cool down the criticism of Canada not being able to score. Forge had lost their last two games which were both home games by 1-0 scores against Valour and Atletico Ottawa so tonight was important to turn the momentum around. For York, they haven't won any league games since May 6th when the beat Forge right here 1-0. There have now been six losses and three ties since then. Their seven goals scored for the season is less half of any every other team. York's record falls to 2 wins, 5 ties, 7 losses for 11 points. They remain in seventh place for now but with the rest of the league playing later this weekend, a tie for FC Edmonton over Pacific FC could knock York into the basement. The win for Forge improves their record to 6 wins, 2 ties, 5 losses for 20 points. That moves them into third place in a tie with Pacific FC but Forge have played two less games and have a better +/- record.
