REACTION: NASH CONFIDENT OF CHANGE IN FORTUNES WITH REINFORCEMENTS ON THEIR WAY A weary and heavily-depleted squad suffered a home loss at the weekend. Martin Nash is confident The Nine Stripes can make up ground on the teams above them in the Canadian Premier League despite recent unfavourable results. A lengthening injury list has robbed York United of their verve and that was evident in Sunday’s 3-1 defeat to FC Valour on home turf at York Lions . This leaves Nash’s side second-bottom in the table and on a 0-4-4 record in their last eight matches. "We got a good mentality in the group, as I keep saying, but if you don't start picking up results it gets tough so we're looking forward to the transfer window because we'll have at least two more players in that we already know of - and that we’ve already announced - and will likely have Rog [captain Roger Thompson] back by then too," Nash reiterated in his post-match comments. "So there'll be more players to choose from. Cedric’s [Toussaint] suspension will be over that same week so we get four players back. As a result, there'll be a bit more we can do and we can hopefully get everyone in their natural positions and comfortable again and hopefully kick on from there." When the team lineups arrived one hour before kick-off, there were audible gasps in the press box at York Lions Stadium. Things have been bad for the past few weeks but with forward Mamadou Kane as the only first-team player on the bench, it seemed like The Nine Stripes were set for a massive challenge. It said much that 24-year-old Cyrus Rollocks - brought in on a two-match emergency deal to help with the lack of available players - only met Nash for the first time earlier that morning. Meanwhile, the other five substitutes were young and untested players on development contracts. It meant Nash severely lacked personnel to vary his game plan when his team was stuck in third gear. Nonetheless, the Head Coach was pleased with the shift by his weary side. The Gaffer said: "I thought we created some good chances and got in some good areas which is positive. It was nice to get back on the scoresheet in the league and the reaction - once we gave the goal away - to score so quickly was really good. "But, I think we're just not fresh enough. Chrisno[N’Sa] wasn't getting forward as much as he normally does and Edu [Eduardo Jesus] was coming in, hasn't played a lot and was up against the fastest winger in the league. I thought he did a decent job but it's always tough and there'll be some growing pains for him going forward." "I thought it was a tough, tough game today. Getting to halftime at nil-nil, we knew they were going to come at us in the second half. We knew they were gonna press us a bit more because we had an injured keeper in Niko who couldn't kick the ball, so that made things difficult for us in terms of keeping possession and they could press higher. We battled through but just didn't have enough today.’’ York's equalizer was scored by Osaze De Rosario - his first in league play since late-April when he found the back of the net against Atletico Ottawa. The 20-year-old has received the backing of Nash to stay amongst the goals. "Hopefully it gives him a little bit of lift to get another goal. It's been a little bit but he's had chances, so it's nice for him finally put one away and hopefully he can get on a roll again." Captain Dominic Zator has told his teammates to double their efforts and reverse their current horror run. "I think right now, we're at a low, we haven't been scoring many goals. We haven't won a game in a while and it's one of those where we have to come together," the centre-back added. "I think right now - when things are getting a little bit down - a lot of players are trying to play individually versus coming together as a team. And I think in order for us to actually move forward and get wins we have to play with more cohesion. We have to play more collectively as a unit and I think this week we're going to be working towards that." © 2022 YORK UNITED FC
