REACTION: 'A REMINDER OF HOW GOOD WE REALLY ARE' - NASH IMMENSELY PROUD OF PLAYERS DESPITE VANCOUVER DEFEAT The team pushed hard against the Whitecaps on Wednesday night at BC Place. After eviction from the 2022 Canadian Championship on Wednesday, Head Coach Martin Nash believes his boys proved they can compete at the highest level. The 2-1 defeat at MLS side Vancouver Whitecaps ended another campaign for the Nine Stripes, though the performance was quite the contrast from a 4-0 quarter-final defeat to Toronto FC last season. York United surrendered ball possession to their hosts but it was not a case of bicycles loaded against tankers. They were defensively sound and managed to keep the scoreline goalless in the first half. "I thought we gave a good account of ourselves, fought to the bitter end and made it close. I'm really proud of the guys," Nash said in his post-match conference. "I thought it was a great performance. We fought for every inch. We always knew it would be tough coming here. Maybe a little bit unlucky with the first goal that’s a deflection on the cross but they [Whitecaps] created a lot and maybe could have had a few more, but really proud of the effort my guys put up today.’’ Nash expects the experience of playing against a team chasing a playoff spot in the MLS to have a positive impact on his team in the Canadian Premier League. "I think it's big, you know. To come here and put that kind of effort in, is a great reminder of how good we really are as a team,'' said Nash, the former Whitecaps midfielder. "I really believe in these guys. We have got a quick turnaround and a tough game at home on Sunday and a lot of these guys will have to go again. But they've been fighting for me all season so I'm proud of the effort and after we go have dinner tonight, we have to move on to the league." In this year’s competition, York United played all three matches on the road. Some have suggested if the club had hosted this giant contest, the attendance would have been greater than what we witnessed at BC Place. For Nash, he sounded indifferent. "I wasn't really paying attention to the crowd, to be honest. But, you never know. It’s a great opportunity if we are hosting because you will probably sell out because we're playing an MLS team," he said. "But I think this is great for our players to get to come to this fantastic facility and play against one of the big three clubs in Canada so it was a great opportunity for our players and we really enjoyed the experience and it's just unfortunate to not come away with the result we wanted." York United are back in action on Sunday at York Lions Stadium against FC Valour. Ridwan Ibrahim Asante
