Final Score:...York United FC........1........Valour FC.....3.......
Attendance wasn't announced but looked somewhat less than last week. The walkup crowd may have been scared off the threat of rain. They were right as it started to rain soon after the game started that was much harder by halftime. The sun came out during second half injury time. *Note: I saw it listed on a site as 1002. Hmm how convenient that it just happens to be over the 1000 mark--sounds better for marketing etc. The game had been moved up from 2:00pm to Noon soon after it was announced that the Canadian National Women's team would be playing a friendly against South Korea scheduled for a 3:00pm start. It has been years since the CWNT played in Toronto. This was the only friendly until the Concacaf qualifying tournament starts. I had been approved press accreditation expecting they the York game up so it wouldn't conflict with the game but it was more for television coverage on OneSoccer. One hour between games to get all the way downtown even with a subway station right outside this stadium's gates. It would still be a long streetcar ride to BMO Field plus security to go through and more traffic bottlenecks with the Pride parade. My work with York is more famous after the game at the press conferences because I post the audio of the entire duration instead of just 30 second sound clips. I called the CSA to give up my press row seat earlier in the week. Valour had quite a few fans but mostly for individual players. There were maybe twenty t-shirts of relatives of Anthony Mikhael (he was from Ottawa I found out after the game). Rocco Romeo I watched for years with Toronto FC II so his fans didn'thave to travel as far. Wow before the game started I was tipped off that York only had one York contracted player on the bench and the rest of the subs were short term development contracts. York head coach after the game admitted he only met two of the players earlier this morning. The team has been playing so many games, four in twelve days, that they haven't had time to train with the new guys. Nash kept them on the bench and only brought one of the new guys in at the 75 minute mark. Having the starters play so many minutes has made them more susceptable to injury. Today they almost lost goalie Niko Giantsopoulos at the 11 minute mark when he smothered a ball in the box and Valour William Akio slid into him with studs up and received a Yellow card. For some reason (but no explanation given) regular backup Matthew Nogueira was a late scratch off the roster and was replaced by Michael Williams who is a U-15 for Bryst Academy. He almost had to fill in today. Where are all the York players? Well arguabley their biggest star since day one is Diyaeddine Abzi who had his final game in the Canadian Championship game on Wednesday night in Vancouver before he left for France to play for second division club Pau FC. Now Austin Ricci, Martin Graiciar, and William Wallace are out with injuries for the season. Michael Petrasso, Oliver Minatel, and Sebastian Gutierrez (who was injured in last weekend's game against Pacific are all out. Only captain Roger Thompson are on the horizon for returning as he will start training next week. Cedric Toussaint is serving his three game suspension for being Red carded. Forward Lowell Wright is away with the Canadian U-20 for the Concacaf tournament in Honduras and will play Guatemala in the round of 16 later today. New signings are Canadian forward Rona Kratt and Australian defender Tass Mourdoukoutas but they can't play until the transfer window opens up July 7th. This is much the same situation as MLS Toronto FC are in waiting for $15 million a season signing Lorenzo Insigne. The two game contract emergency player that did come into the game for York was Cyrus Rollocks who was an original York 9 FC player in 2019 and this year plays for League1 Ontario team Scrosoppi FC. He was credited in the first game broadcast as scoring the first ever CPL goal for all of three minutes until replays showed it was Ryan Telfer. Last week's emergency signing was Aiden Hugo (age 18) who played for L1O North Toronto Nitros and once again he wasn't used. I expect if the game had been 3-1 at the end of the first half, the entire bench would have been emptied to rest the starters for another day. Staying in the game until 88 minutes probably kept the regulars in the game looking for a late tie. York breaks out of a six league game scoring slump with Osaze De Rosario scoring just a minute after Valour's opening goal. That was a surprise as it's been so long for the team without a goal (well league games anyway). York continues to slip down the table now in seventh place as the win ensure Valour passed York into sixth place. York's record falls to 2 wins, 5 losses, 5 ties for 11 points. York next travels to Edmonton to play the eighth place team on Friday July 1st (Canada Day). FC Edmonton can close to one point behind if they win. Rocket Robin robing@eol.ca twitter @RocketRobin01
