June 10, 2022...Lowell Wright Named in Canada U-20 Squad for CONCACAF Championship (from York United FC website)
LOWELL WRIGHT NAMED IN CANADA UNDER-20 SQUAD FOR CONCACAF CHAMPIONSHIP The 18-year-old striker already featured for the team during a short camp in Costa Rica earlier this year. York United FC striker Lowell Wright has been named in Canada's squad for the upcoming CONCACAF Men's Under-20 Championship which begins on 18th June in Honduras. The 18-year-old has played a crucial role for The Nine Stripes so far this season, despite having missed two league games due to his involvement in an Under-20 camp in Costa Rica back in April. Wright has amassed nine appearances in all competitions (seven Canadian Premier League games, two Canadian Championship fixtures) and racked up 656 minutes in total. He's contributed two assists: teeing up Diyaeddine Abzi for his superb strike in the cup shootout win over Atletico Ottawa and sending in an inch-perfect cross for Osaze De Rosario to glance home in another penalty success over Pacific FC at Starlight Stadium. A history-maker in the CPL owing to his debut goal at just 16 years of age at The Island Games back in 2020, Wright enjoyed an excellent campaign last season and finished as the club's joint-top scorer with six goals, while he added a further three assists across 30 appearances in all competitions. He now adds another string to his bow and links up with Mauro Biello's team for a tournament that represents the qualification route for the FIFA Under-20 World Cup that takes place in Indonesia in 2023 and the Men's Olympic Football Tournament in 2024. Also included in the Canada squad is Vancouver Whitecaps defender Matteo Campagna, who enjoyed an excellent loan spell with York United last season. The competition will run from 18th June until 3rd July and Canada will battle it out for one of four CONCACAF berths that will qualify them for the World Cup and two berths that will see them compete at the Olympic Games. Drawn in Group E, Canada will take on Cuba, Saint Kitts & Nevis and USA and from there, three nations will advance to the knockout phase. Throughout the competition, fans will find extended coverage across Canada Soccer’s digital channels on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and YouTube featuring the hashtag #canm20.
