York United confirms departure Daniel Obbekjaer, injury to William Wallace 2022-06-10 York United FC NEWS York United FC can confirm the departure of Danish defender Daniel Obbekjaer to Faroe Islands club 07 Vestur. The 19-year-old centre-back arrived in the off-season, having spent a number of years with well-known top-flight side Odense, with whom he made his professional debut at just 16 years of age. While at Odense, Obbekjaer also represented his country for the first time at Under-16 level while he’s continued through various underage groups since, culminating with a number of appearances for the Danish U-19s. “Dan is a fantastic person and he’s been a joy to have around the club,” says York United FC’s President/CEO & GM. “He’s an excellent professional and he simply wants to play more games so this is a good opportunity for him to break into a senior team and get the minutes he needs for his development. We wish him nothing but the very best and thank him for his efforts while with us.” Obbekjaer’s departure comes at an interesting time for The Nine Stripes. The team has been hit with a spate of recent injuries that has ensured a threadbare squad, with Brazilian William Wallace the latest victim. An injury suffered in training has ensured he’ll now miss the remainder of the 2022 campaign. This follows a similar update regarding striker Austin Ricci. “Sadly, Wallace has ruptured his ACL,” says McNab. “This occurred last Thursday and was confirmed by MRI and surgical consultation earlier this week. He will now undergo surgery in Canada when the swelling in the knee reduces but unfortunately his season is over. I feel it’s important to stress that this was very much a freak training accident where William hyper-extended when stretching to cross a ball. We are all gutted for him as he was just getting back after his hamstring strain and settling well with the group.” Given the extent of the team’s long-term injury situation as well as the Obbekjaer departure, McNab has confirmed there will be additional roster movement over the next few weeks. “I think we will have a busy time once the next transfer window opens up on July 7th,” he says. “We have some flexibility with three international spots. Given the injuries we have had, there will be movement with players arriving at the club. And with the continued development and success of our young talent too, some players could also be moving onto new opportunities.”
