Preview: York United FC vs Cavalry FC

Head Coach Martin Nash has tasked his players not to lower the bar when they host Calvary FC
at York Lions Stadium on Sunday afternoon in the Canadian Premier League.

The Nine Stripes just returned from the west coast where they faced Pacific FC in back-to-back
matches including the penalty shootout victory over the Tridents to reach the last four
of the Canadian Championship.

The last time the Cavs came to town was last month and they were enveloped with a 2-0 defeat
thanks to goals from Oliver Minatel and Osaze De Rosario.

But since then Tommy Wheeldon Jnr’s side have not lost a game in five league matches
and improved 4-1-0 which catapulted them to second on the table.

York United are also on a surge despite suffering one defeat- a painful 1-0 reverse at Valour FC
after a solid performance.

But they have dropped to fourth-place, two points behind joint second Calvary and Atletico Ottawa,
with nine points.

Nonetheless, Nash expects his personnel to produce another match-winning performance.

''I think we're in a good place. The guys are confident despite not scoring in the first game
[against Pacific FC]. I think defensively we're confident,’’ the Gaffer disclosed
at Friday’s press conference.

''We’re working really hard which is good and I think the guys are in a good place right now.

''So we have to go out and have a good game. We know it's going to be a competitive game
and Calvary are very difficult team to beat so it's not going to be easy.

''We know that and as I said, look at ways that we can hurt them and also look at their
strengths so we can hopefully keep them at bay because it's going to be a battle.

''We know that going in and we just have to go with the right mindset which we've had consistently
this year.’’

This term, Nash is yet to maintain a starting XI and the tradition will continue with captain
Roger Thompson ruled out

The centre-back hurt his hamstring injury before half time at Starlight Stadium during
the clash against Pacific.

He is expected to sit out for a couple of weeks.

''Roger is the only one- the knock that we've picked up. We’re not sure the extent but it's at least
a strain so he'll be out a couple of weeks probably so we'll see,’’ Nash added.

''We maybe ran him back a little bit early from his last one [injury] but we wanted him in the Cup
match so we gave him the 30 minutes on the Friday, he came through fine and was feeling good
and and unfortunately he lasted 40 minutes in the next game.

‘’So we'll just make sure we get him back right fully fit before we push him into the next time
he plays so he's still a few weeks away at least.’’

OPPONENT WATCH:

Calvary put up a brave fight in midweek but surrendered on penalties to MLS side Whitecaps
at Spruce Meadows in the Canadian Championship quarter-final.

The Cavs proved they were no pushovers and their strength is in that midfield marshalled
by captain Charlie Trafford, Ali Musse and Elliot Simmons.

Centre-backs Karifa Yao and Mason Trafford have been solid and goalkeeper Marco Carducci
is one to beat.
