Attendance wasn't announced but was listed as 1267 on the league website. It looked like the largest crowd of the season. This was the first matinee game of the season. The scoreboard flashed the names of the youth teams that were here today and there might have been 14 to 16 teams here. A group of kids from the Vaughan Soccer Club and Peterborough City (wow 127 km away) were rehearsing to accompany the players out before the game. Vaughan could be expected as they moved a League1 Ontario game here to play one hour after this CPL game ended was scheduled on about three weeks notice. North Toronto Nitros would have played last night at 8:00pm at their Downsview Turf home. Vaughan Azzurri were the visitors. Both these teams are among the best in the league. I estimated that about 400 people stayed for that game. Today's game was called "Italian Heritage Day" and had an Italian festival theme. Only momentum killer is York will be on the road over the next two weekends and be back for Saturday June 18th at 4:00pm against last season's champions Pacific FC. The weather was hot and sunny which is great for drawing fans out. The referee scheduled a water break in each half. Later comments on the message boards said the concession stands ran out of water for the fans to buy. York had one of those 'if only' moments when at 51 minutes Lowell Wright had a long run up the right and holding off a defender bent in a cross that found Osaze De Rosario who one-touched a 4 yard shot on the left post over the open net. Cavalry made a total of three changes at 62 minutes swapping out offensive power for fresh offensive power. The goalscorer was one of those changes, young Aribu Pepple scoring his first CPL goal on a pass from fellow 62 minute input Sergio Camargo feeding him the pass and drawing two defenders over to his side of the box to deal with him. A total of 11 Yellow cards were given out in today's physical game. York received seven of them including one to head coach Martin Nash and two to Chrisnovic N'Sa which means he was ejected at 82 minutes and made a York comeback even more difficult. Those Yellow cards knock three players out of York's next match, this Saturday against HFX Wanderers, with N'Sa (of course) but also Isaiah Johnston and Diyaeddine Abzi for earning their fourth Yellow of the season. Add these players to the long injury list and they will hard pressed to have seven players on the subs bench. Today they only listed six and this was a home game! York have a good defensive record, only allowing six goals against (hey best in the league), but they also are last in goal scoring with only six in eight games. Hidden in the glaze of their Canadian Championship success is the fact this was their third league game in a row where they haven't scored. York had only beaten Cavalry once in their four seasons of battles and that was their last game here on April 22nd. Now Cavalry is starting again building their hex over this team. York's record falls to two wins, three ties, and three losses for 9 points and good for fifth place with more games to come on a stretched weekend lasting until midweek. Cavalry wins and shoots up to second place with a record of four wins, two tied, two losses for 14 points. This is sure a turnaround from the last meeting when Cavalry were here and they had no wins and were pressing for last place. They haven't lost a CPL game since. Cavalry had lost midweek to MLS Vancouver Whitecaps in a penalty shootout (starts immediately after the 90 minutes in the event of a tie) in their one-game quarterfinal match of the Canadian Championship. York beat Pacific in their quarterfinal match also in a penalty shootout to go with their preliminary round win over Atletico Ottawa also by penalty shootout. Only problem for we fans is that those games were on the road so we didn't get to see the excitement and the team missed out on the live gate money. Their semi-final round is at BC Place against Whitecaps so another road game. If they win, the final will be hosted by York against either MLS clubs Toronto FC or CF Montreal.
