PREVIEW: YORK UNITED GO TOE-TO-TOE AGAIN WITH PACIFIC FC LATER ON TUESDAY NIGHT AT STARLIGHT STADIUM IN THE QUARTER-FINAL CHAMPIONSHIP. This comes on the back of their first meeting of the season, last Friday, which ended in a stalemate. Head coach Martin Nash lauded his players for perfectly executing the game plan which earned one point in the 0-0 draw and the Gaffer is expecting them to go one better. ''I think the mentality is going to be the same,'' Nash said in Monday’s pre-match conference. ''We had a great mentality, we got pressure on the ball which certainly limited their time and space which is big against a team that has got so many players that are good on the ball. ''So, if we can do that, again, it puts us in a good place and as I said, we do have to be better in the final third. ''Showing the video back to the players, it comes out a bit of decision making. In some instances, we've got into some great areas but the decision making maybe wasn't as good as it should be, or could have been on the day. ''So a few things to clean up but looking for the same kind of effort. I think it's going to be an even game and the team that's going to finish its chances is going to win.'' In the previous qualifying round, the Nine Stripes eliminated Atletico Ottawa on penalties at TD Place and they know they must dig deep again to seal through. Nash added: ''It's a great competition and one that every CPL team wants to get as far as they can and try to win it. So, I think there's a lot on the line in this game and both teams know it and both teams will throw everything we have at it. To team news, goalkeeper Niko Giantsopoulos has rejoined the squad after ending an emergency loan stay at MLS side Whitecaps were he warmed the bench in Sunday’s 2-1 defeat at Charlotte. Substantive captain Roger Thompson was a second half substitute four days ago and should be fit to return to the starting line-up. OPPONENT WATCH Pacific had an amazing run in the competition last year including wins over MLS side Whitecaps and before that fellow CPL campaigners Calvary FC before crushing at the semi-final hurdle to Toronto FC. But they have a lot of work to do as head coach James Merriman was forced to make three substitutions before half time against York. The league leaders are now sweating in the fitness levels ofJordan Haynes, Manny Aparicio and Sean Young. But Marco Bustos and Alejandro Diaz are like artillery weapons and will need special attention. FOOTNOTES Ridwan Ibrahim Asante © 2022 YORK UNITED FC
