REACTION: NASH LAMENTS 'HARSH' RESULT AFTER DOMINATING IN WINNIPEG The Nine Stripes were in complete control but succumbed to a late Valour FC winner. It's a first defeat on the road for York United in the 2022 Canadian Premier League after going down 1-0 on Sunday to Valour FC at IG Field. Gaffer Martin Nash felt the three points collected by Phil Dos Santos' side gave the match a deceptive look. They were undone by an 87th minute long-rage delivery courtesy Sean Rea from just outside the box. "Maybe the result feels a little bit harsh in the end," Nash said afterwards. "A fantastic goal to win a match, to be fair, but I thought we should have at least stopped him [Rea], or foul with three guys around him. We allowed him go through and it was a fantastic finish. But it's always tough when you miss a penalty too, you kinda feel like you have the game a little bit." ''I thought we're good for the first 35 minutes of the first half and I thought we were good for the first 35 minutes of the second half. I thought we tailed off in the end of both halves.'' After a tepid opening period, the Nine Stripes produced a stirred-up second half display and outshot Valour (12v4) with 16 touches inside the opponent's area compared to Valour's five at the other side of the pitch. The incessant pressure paid off when York United were awarded a penalty on 54 minutes when Moses Dyer handled a ball inside the box. Osaze De Rosario, the club's top scorer, elected to take it but his effort to the left was blocked by goalkeeper Jonathan Sirois. "We made them aware of a few things tactically that we thought we could take advantage of," Nash disclosed, revealing the tone of the half-time talk with his players. "We gave them a little bit of a kick in the butt because I don’t think it was our best half in general. We just demanded more, and to be fair we came out flying. It was a really good effort… got the penalty but weren't able to capitalize. These things happen." "I thought we got into a lot of good areas. Our decision making in the final third wasn’t great or at our best, especially in the first half; instead of getting the ball wide we tried to force it through the middle where they had numbers. That was a bit frustrating at times, but I thought we got into some good areas and we just weren't quite sharp in the final third." The Nine Stripes will head to Vancouver Island on Friday, May 20th to face league leaders Pacific FC. Ibrahim Ridwan Asante
