REACTION: DELICIOUS DERBY WIN 'A GREAT BAROMETER' FOR NINE STRIPES, SAYS NASH Friday's 1-0 home victory over Forge FC saw some special moments shared between players and fans. Martin Nash believes there could be a deeper meaning to York United's derby win over Forge FC on Friday in the Canadian Premier League. The Nine Stripes' Head Coach oversaw his side's tactically-disciplined 1-0 win at York Lions Stadium in the first 905 Derby of the year. And full marks to Colombian import Sebastian Gutierrez, whose world-class finish in the 79th minute earned the spoils. Nash has no doubts this victory will serve as 'a barometer' for his players and can provide the elixir needed for their campaign. "I really think highly of this Forge team and some of the players they have, and their movement is arguably the best in the league at times," The Gaffer said, speaking highly of his opponents in his post-match conference. "It's not just the movement but how smart they are uncovering each other so they don't leave a lot of gaps. I thought we explored every little gap we could in the second half but it's a great barometer for the group especially early in the season against a confident group and a really good side that we know we now can compete with. I know we've done in the past but every year is different so it's a good yardstick for us." From the onset, York United looked a depleted side with regulars Roger Thompson [captain], Max Ferrari, Oliver Minatel and Michael Petrasso in the treatment room for various degrees of injuries; and midfielders Cedric Toussaint and Mateo Hernandez serving card-related suspensions. But the lads had to squeeze water from stone. They kept their noses to the grindstone and collectively put in impressive shifts to shutout a well-rested Forge FC side. Despite having 38.5% of ball possession, York United were better in other key areas against the Hamilton-based side, having more attempts (12 v 6) and shots on target (6 v2). "I don't know if it's the best game. I felt the Cavalry game [2-0 win] might be better in some ways but it was a very good game," Nash added. "We battled and defended against arguably the best attacking team in this league currently and over the last few years, so it was a really good game defensively, I was really happy with our structure and we didn't give them a ton of chances. I thought we created more chances than them." "We had a bit of a slow start that gave them a really good chance to open the game but after that, I think we settled down and we didn't give them a lot and that's a really good attacking team. They put a lot of stress on you because they have a lot of great movement from midfield and their wide players and interchange really well. And they do it in good positions so that they don't give a lot of counter attacks away. They're a very good team, so I'm just proud of the effort to be able to come up with a win against a team like that." Up next is a trip to Ottawa on Tuesday to face Atletico in the Canadian Championship. Ibrahim Ridwan Asante
