Attendance wasn't announced but the CPL website posted it as 1108. We were back to an early start of 7:00pm instead of 7:30pm and I figured out why. OneSoccer was broadcasting tonight a double header with Cavalry FC away to FC Edmonton which they scheduled for 9:30pm. Great for broadcasting but that maroons a lot of fans in downtown Toronto. Not they couldn't take the subway right up to the gate of the stadium but not enough time to get home and gather up the family to get them here on time. As expected the start of the game looked pretty empty but it did fill in as it got near to the end of the half. Yet another cold night with parkas the preferred wear of those who stayed until the end of the game as the temperatures fell like a rock once it was dark. I'd give more than 100 as travelling Forge fans. A ticket offer of $5.00 admission for wearing any Canadian soccer team's merchandise may have brought in a few more people tonight. Referee Fabrizio Stasolla gave out eight Yellow cards, four to each team, which didn't mean it was a dirty game. Five were for dissent including one to the Forge bench and all four to York including one for excessive goal celebrations (ie Gutierrez pulling off his shirt to celebrate his goal). I didn't realize Forge was dominating possession until I saw the game stats later with Forge holding 61.5% possession and 161 more passes but it may have been a lot of control in their own end as they only had one shot on target tonight. Sebastian Gutierrez had rolled a 15 yard shot wide of the post at 62 minutes but scored on a roller after eluding a sliding defender and then freezing the goalie to score at 78 minutes. Must have been pent up emotion why he ripped off his shirt to celebrate but I heard that was only his second goal ever for York. I'd give Osaze De Rosario an assist so although he didn't get a goal tonight in his fourth start, he could say he's had points in each of his four starts. I was thinking with Gutierrez's earlier misses tonight that he would be subbed off as Nash had brought on some offensive players and Gutierrez was in motion the whole game. I had been told before the game that the York bench was thin (not in numbers but quality). Ok on the bench were forwards Dante Lomangino who was a U-18, midfielder Soji Olatoye who is one of their U-Sports draft pick--hey from York University so he'd already have a locker somewhere on campus! He is playing for the York Lions (University team). William Wallace is finally ready to make his first appearance of the season after recovering from a hamstring injury. He was brought in at 94 minutes so Lowell Wright could take a bow being subbed off. The starting eleven was like a Jimmy Brennan lineup of last year with ten Canadians starting (only Gutierrez is an import). Three of those starting up front are U-21s. Max Ferrari watched the game in street clothes as he'll be out for another few weeks. Oliver Minatel we all saw his hamstring injury last week. Defender/captain Roger Thompson was injured in training. Michael Petrasso is still recovering from injury. Disipline problems also kept Cedric Toussaint and Mateo Hernandez out of the lineup. Toussaint had his Red card suspension reduced from three games to one game so he'll be back. Also, finally Lisandro Cabrera is in Canada and at this game after finally getting his visa problems sorted out so he could come here from Argentina. Wow yet another forward! I thought the stars of the game was the pairing of Dominick Zator and Jordan Wilson in defence. Wilson stepped back from his usual midfield role to help out and the two of them kept the Forge shot count down with timely blocks and checks. Niko Giantsopoulos earned the shutout tonight, his second of the season. A win tonight was crucial to York who now have four of their next five league games on the road. Their only home game is Sunday May 29th at 2:00pm. We'll see if warmer weather and a matinee hopefully improves attendance. The result vaults York up two spots in the table to second place with a record of 2 wins, 2 ties, 1 loss for 8 points although seeing they once again play the first game of the weekend, they could be knocked back to fourth. Atletico Ottawa who are in second place play the first place Pacific FC so Ottawa stays down or first place becomes within reach for York by their next game. Forge FC's loss means their record falls to 1 win, 1 tie, 2 losses for 4 points. That's currently in a three way tie for fifth but it's expected they will drop in the standings by the end of the weekend. York's next game is on Tuesday in the preliminary round of the Canadian Championship when they travel to Atletico Ottawa. This was the main reason why the CPL games were turned into two doubleheaders on Friday night and Saturday with no games on Sunday. It will be interesting to see if one more day of rest, well a half day because the Atletico Saturday game is in the afternoon will help York although they do have to travel to get there. I was asking about why the competition was only one game each round (the Covid scare is retracting into history) but was told it was the Canadian Soccer Association's decision. I'm sure I saw before the draw some of the teams selling season ticket packages including one Canadian Championship match so either they lucked in with a home date or that perk was silently withdrawn.
