Attendance wasn't announced but was listed as 1004 on the league website. There was certainly a larger group of kids on the field than last game for the pre-game ceremony all from 'International FC'. The weather turned out to be nicer than predicted with it being cold but no rain ended up falling. Fans got more to cheer about tonight with the club's first goal at home from Oliver Minatel who had played for Cavalry in previous seasons opening the scoring at 34 minutes then Osaze De Rosario scoring an insurance goal at 72 minutes (his second of the year) on a bullet blast. Niko Giantopoulos earned the shut out for York. He also played for Cavalry in previous years. This marked the first win for York head coach Martin Nash who was an assistant coach for Cavalry for the three previous seasons. Osaze De Rosario had no distinct way of celebrating his goal but no pressure as I don't remember his father, Canadian Soccer Hall of Famer, Dwayne De Rosario developing the 'Shake-n-Bake' until well into his career. Austin Ricci was on the original York 9 FC roster in that first season and was just signed earlier in the week to come back and help out the team's attack. Forward Lowell Wright was away at the Canadian Under 20 camp but is expected back for the next game. Having Wright and De Rosario on the field together means the team may play even more offensively. They also check the boxes for the league's Under 21 rule this year which has increased from 1500 to 2000 minutes per season. Midfielder Michael Petrasso missed this game with an ankle injury. Forward Lisandro Agustin Cabrera is still waiting his visa before arriving from Argentina to add to the York attack. The press box was quieter than usual. It took me awhile to notice there was no Sauga 960 radio broadcast of the game. Commentator Eoin O'Callagan who is also York's VP of Content and Communication Stategy said the game was bumped on short notice so the station could broadcast the Mississauga Steelheads (Ontario Hockey League) playoff game. York improves its record to 1 win, 1 tie, and 1 loss to start this season. Their results have improved from loss to tie to win. They vault all the way to third place in the eight team lead but once again they play the first game of the weekend so expect other teams to move up after their games. York had never beaten Cavalry until this tenth meeting of the clubs. I remember in 2019 when a nine-man Cavalry team was here and earned a tie so I never felt that York would win this game until 85 minutes when Jean-Aniel Assi eluded the York goalie to set up an empty net shot but he hit it into the outside side webbing of the net. York's opening game was one of those almost firsts as HFX Wanderers won only their second road game in its history. I expect many records will fall in the league's fourth year but only its second of regular full season home and away schedule. Cavalry's record falls to 0 wins, 1 tie, 2 losses for a very slow start for them. Tonight was the start of a three game homestand for York. Next game is next Friday against the improved Atletico Ottawa who have started with two wins out of the gate to co-lead the standings.
